My name is Destiny Dewar, My parents are both Jamaican Immigrants. Growing up with one sister and one brother gave me the opportunity to be a leader because I am the oldest. I grew up in the Bronx, New York where I continued my K-12 education here. I am a member at Convent Avenue Baptist Church in Harlem, NY. I’ve been attending as long as I could possibly remember. Being an active member in my church has allowed me to peruse the opportunity roles as president of the dance team as well as vise president of Convent Avenue Baptist Church youth Choir. I have also been presented with the chance to work with the kids in the nursery at my church. Being able to help out is what I desire to do. Preparing bags for the kids in the community during back to school night and preparing meals during the holiday season for the community members while being able to see the smile is what I live for.
I have also been able to be presented with many opportunities at my school. Being able to create an action plan for a chronic illness I selected and present it to fellow doctors in my community has been something huge for me. Ive always chose the chronic illness of Parkinson's Disease. Growing up I had a babysitter who had Parkinson’s disease. In 2017 she died from this chronic illness. I never really understood what this was, but because my school created this opportunity for us I took it and made sure I researched all aspects of this disease so I can later present to a doctor.
Current Whereabouts:
Im currently into book reading. I enjoy reading books that can give me advice. I'm also interested into clothes. Clothes is one of the many ways I'm able to express how I'm feeling.
Life & Professional Aspirations:
Attending college and majoring in biological science, I strive to make a difference and help serve society. I will gain the knowledge I would need to know to take and pass the Medical College Admission Test. Upon passing this exam, I will get one step closer to my career as a pediatric surgeon. Receiving my college education and applying the various skills I would learn will help me serve society throughout my professional career as a doctor. My college education plays a vital role because it is a channel that leads me down a pathway of fulfilling my life’s purpose as well as career goals.
In ten years, I see myself with the title of being a medical doctor. Becoming a doctor will allow me to use one of my profound passions of helping others and making sure children’s needs are met on a surgical and professional level. Being able to make sure that children get the proper care they deserve no matter their race, religious belief, or gender. Using the skills that I will have acquired from the biological sciences will open up pathways for me to strive and be the best doctor that I can be. Even though navigating my way through college majoring in biological sciences isn’t going to be easy it will be worth it because there will be mountains that I would have to move out of my way. Being able to accomplish something so amazing becoming the pediatric surgeon I desire to be will not only illustrate hard work but will also be inspiring, nurturing, and encouraging to others. I want to show others, especially children that they can accomplish whatever they wish if they put their mind to it. Moreover, I would like to be a doctor who would volunteer as a guest speaker for career day at the local schools in my community.
