Scholarship Essay: 2024-03-06 14:18:05
It was June 2020. I was engaging in a class discussion with my peers in my high school back in Johannesburg, South Africa, at the African Leadership Academy when a group of 10 Morehouse men walked into the classroom exuding confidence and pride. I clearly remember how captivating and well-spoken those brothers were as they shared their passion for leadership and why they had chosen Morehouse. They were all upperclassmen and Oprah Winfrey Scholars at Morehouse and that afternoon exchange left an indelible impression on me. That evening, I made a pivotal decision about my higher education goals forgoing all my offers from universities in Asia and Europe, placing my faith in Morehouse, and Morehouse only, hoping to receive the Oprah Winfrey Scholarship to attend this transformational institution. This dream became a reality in August 2021, marking a significant milestone as the sole student from my high school to attend an HBCU. Embracing Morehouse's legacy of black male excellence became more than just a personal aspiration. It evolved into a mission to pave the way for other African students seeking higher education opportunities abroad. Having witnessed my transformational journey here, I am happy to share that several students from my high school have since been admitted to Morehouse, preparing to embark on their own transformative experiences.

I am deeply grateful for this opportunity, recognizing the importance of fostering strong educational partnerships between Black America and the African continent. I reflect the excellence of Morehouse College as a Junior Mathematics, Computer Science, and Economics triple major, Oprah Winfrey Scholar, Martin Luther Jr. Legacy Scholar, Howard Thurman Honors Scholar, and proud President of the Morehouse International Student Organization. My journey has taken me from Ivory Coast to the African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa, and now to the esteemed Morehouse College, or as I like to call it, the African-American Leadership Academy. Morehouse is preparing me to meet my future goal of building educational institutions that will connect African students and African American students through enriching study abroad opportunities, and exchange programs because we need each other’s strengths, genius, heritage, and ideas to elevate to our fullest potential with the spirit of Ubuntu, “I am because we are”.
