About   (request update)
Once upon a time, in another life where I wouldn’t use cliches to start a very important essay, my mother plopped her baby in front of the flashing Panasonic 15” TV set. The familiar music blared from the single speaker, playing the soothing sound of Disney's “Wish Upon a Star”.It was the beginning of every movie I was ever allowed to watch. “ Tyler Gwendolyn Brown don't sit so close to the TV '', She would bark at me in a syncopated and toneless way somewhere on the scale between annoyance and anger. It didn’t matter though. I was enthralled and enchanted as if the fairy godmother had touched me with her wand. I was in love with Cinderella, even though I’ve seen it more times then I could count on my juvenile fingers, in that moment it had inadvertently jumpstarted a deep-seated passion for film dormant inside me.
Now passion isn’t the only attribute that's come to me through the years. Resilience, a sense of activism, and creativity are all factors that have shaped me, along with all the mentors I’ve had along the way to aid in my learning and to facilitate my paths to success.
Writing has never been my favorite subject, it was time consuming and boring, and more importantly in the fifth grade they switched my art class for an essay writing class and I was not happy. But time changes everything and the irony that it’s become such a major element of my life, how I’ve grown to appreciate it with every fiber of my being.
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, another clique I know but my mom's an educator with a passion for getting more girls in STEM, and my dad’s salesmen with the gift of instantly being able to talk to a new person into being a client. Yet somehow I’ve gotten neither of their natural charisma or personality, I had to learn that all on my own. It wasn’t easy, things like that never are, especially when you have anxiety as I do that tends to keep you down, but I can confidently say that I got there. It was a difficult journey but would you really learn from it if it wasn’t?
Through the years I’ve had a mix and wash of hobbies and interests that changed unexpectedly and often. Going from an interest in traditional art to photography, from the sewing I picked up from my grandmother, to graphic design, and through all those I somehow found my way to film. It was the perfect Goldilocks of the hobbies that I loved about all the creative mediums, fitting itself into the perfect dream job, Production Design. Being a part of something greater has always been the dream, my definition of success and the idea of being able to do my job and get an award for the set I’ve put together, and the scenes I’ve managed, and the clothes and props I’ve created, is fuel for my fire of passion. I relish being able to use film to help improve my community and inspire those like me and going to college would be the next catalyst for the evolution of my career. The environment of other passionate filmmakers, the ability to connect, relate and support them in achieving their passions as well, is sure to aid me in writing my formula for a fulfilling career.
