About   (request update)
Before living in El Paso, my parents were stationed in Fort Sill, OK. Living in Oklahoma in and of itself was a challenge. As a young African American man, I felt Oklahoma was not receptive to me. When my family got there, I noticed that I stood out, but I didn’t know why. I then learned during several instances that I may have not been wanted there. The first one was a teacher calling my parents and asking if my nickname of “Trey” was gang-related, despite my having never participated in any gang or gang-related activities. Not to mention living in a small rural town free of gang activity. There were also many times, I was singled out by teachers and other authority figures and punished for actions that my Oklahoma native peers were not.
And then there was school football, where I had higher stats than other players and held a better demeanor, but I was benched. Even worse my fellow teammates themselves were toxic, as they bullied and hazed me and other players. When my parents confronted the coaches, the head coach said, “Let boys be boys.”
After being in this environment for 5 years, I felt school was not a safe place. It became the center of harassment and the source of my dehumanization. We then moved to Texas where I proceeded to excel in both sports and school. Teachers and students didn’t assume anything about me, I was accepted for who I am, and my potential was recognized. The coaches at my new school valued work ethic, and the players valued teamwork and camaraderie. With this new group, the coaches helped build me up to where I am now: a defensive starter and a team leader. Every day I step onto the field I know I am representing our coaches’ teachings of dedication, leadership, and integrity. I also know I am doing it alongside my brothers, and my teammates.
