Most Memorable Moment:
During my junior year at the University of the Virgin Islands, I encountered numerous experiences that shaped my character and left lasting impressions. However, one particular assignment from my Science 100 class stands out as the most memorable. The primary objective of the Science 100 course is to educate students about the scientific principles and historical context underlying the wildlife and natural phenomena of the Virgin Islands. It aims to bridge the gap between our island's scientific knowledge and advancements, fostering a deeper understanding of our natural environment. For my final assignment, I chose to delve into the issue of pollution and debris surrounding the mangroves and beaches of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. This topic struck a chord with me as I witnessed firsthand the degradation of our pristine shores. Through rigorous research and thoughtful planning, I formulated an action plan to address this pressing environmental concern. What truly imbued this experience with significance and joy was the opportunity to involve the community in our efforts. In particular, I reached out to the youth of our community, recognizing their potential to effect change and instill a sense of stewardship for our environment. Together, we embarked on a collective mission to clean up the shores, gathering approximately seven bags of trash in the process. This endeavor was not merely an academic exercise; it was a demonstration of the power of community engagement and proactive environmental stewardship. It brought me immense satisfaction to witness the enthusiasm and dedication of my peers as we worked towards a common goal of preserving the natural beauty of our island home. As I reflect on this experience, I am reminded of the profound impact that collective action can have in addressing environmental challenges. It reinforced my commitment to advocating for the protection of our natural resources and inspired me to continue working towards a sustainable future for generations to come.
