Claim To Fame:
Seek first to understand and then to be understood. My most impactful experiences have been my African Diaspora and the World Class and First Year Composition Class at Spelman College. Attending a Historically Black College ensures that all my teachers are comfortable and encouraged to discuss disparities and their origins. In my FYE class, we read the book “The Sum of Us,” which had a chapter discussing the predatory nature of how people lose their houses and can spiral into poverty. The class engagement and the book itself led to discussions regarding the right to property, the many ways this right has been challenged, and the millions that these challenges have affected. In my ADW class, we learned about intersectionality in African communities and worldwide. It helped me understand the complicated centuries worth of issues that have led to Africa’s classism, poverty, and exploitation issues. These two classes have taught me to always look deeper into a problem because understanding the nature of situations can be as important as the situation itself. More personally, attending Spelman has helped me to understand how race has affected my Spelman sisters all over the world. My peers came to school with different cultures and economic backgrounds. Our struggles are different. I assumed that attending an HBCU would make me feel at home within this community. In learning and understanding all my new sisters I realize that I should seek first to understand and then to be understood.
Most Memorable Moment:
Spelman is notorious for its ceremonies, Founder's Day, and sisterhood. But my most memorable experience thus far has been SpelHouse Homecoming 2023. I loved seeing alumna from the last decades supporting the current students and celebrating their school. I loved the daily concerts and all the food. The football games and halftime band performance was like a movies. I often felt like I was wandering thru the HBCU experiences I dreamed about in high school. I myself, felt free to dress up or shall I say dress down and focus strictly on my social life for once. Spelhouse Homcoming 2024 gave me everything I wanted and more!
