No one likes to be poor. None! Poverty dehumanizes and destroys people’s confidence and hope! I have encountered people in poverty in West Virginia coal mines communities and the lower fifth ward, New Orleans, Louisiana and one very similar thing they all have in common and complained: hopelessness! After the storm and challenges, their prides and confidences were shattered and when you tell them there is hope around the corner with US SBA loans awarded to help rebuild their lives, they can hardly believe you. I imagined most has been beaten down with circumstances of poverty and having none, an exception for them is unimaginable and unfortunately, unbelievable. Everyday on the deployment, I go back to my hotel to sleep and come back to them, deeply worried and conflicted! I quit that job after two years because l couldn’t take it anymore! I needed counseling! Life happens and when you’re faced with poverty, the blood in you swells and freezes!! You take time to process it an say: but for grace, there goes I!
