Claim To Fame:
My “Claim to Fame” in college will be my ability to inspire others through my resilience, perseverance, and determination to overcome adversity. As a 57-year-old returning student, single mother, and breast cancer survivor, I bring a unique perspective to the college experience. My journey is one of overcoming tremendous personal challenges, including surviving childhood trauma, and the loss of my mother to suicide. Yet, I have never let those obstacles define me or limit my potential. In college, I will be known not just for my academic achievements, but also for my commitment to serving others. I am deeply passionate about social work, and I believe that my personal experiences—having experienced both hardship and the power of resilience—will allow me to connect with and inspire others in meaningful ways. I hope to be recognized as someone who uses my story to motivate others to overcome their struggles and pursue their dreams, no matter the odds. I want my classmates to see that age, past mistakes, and challenges are not barriers to success; they are merely stepping stones to greatness. Furthermore, my “Claim to Fame” will also be my dedication to creating a supportive, inclusive community on campus. As someone who has faced adversity, I know how important it is to have a network of people who lift you and encourage your growth. I hope to create a space where other students, particularly those who have faced significant challenges in their lives, feel seen, heard, and supported. Whether it’s through mentoring, organizing events, or simply being a listening ear, I aspire to contribute to a campus culture that values empathy, resilience, and mutual support. In essence, my “Claim to Fame” will be the way I embody the power of education to transform lives. I will be known as a student who never gave up, who turned hardship into motivation, and who, through my actions and my story, encourages others to believe in their ability to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
