My name is Coretta Williams, a sophomore Psychology/ Pre-Nursing student at North Carolina A&T State University. My journey towards nursing began long before I understood the complexities of the profession. At a very young age, I was always eager to care for others and was known as the "family nurse." However, my decision and desire to attend an HBCU began four years ago in 2020. This was the year that I started High School, COVID-19 became a global pandemic, and our great nation made of mostly immigrants and indigenous people debated on whether Black Lives Mattered. I had to do some deep soul-searching: What is my purpose? What is my heritage and identity? What legacy do I want to leave behind?

Doc McStuffins was one of my earliest heroes, who exemplified kindness and compassion in her role as a toy doctor. As I grew older, I found inspiration in more mature portrayals of healthcare professionals. Characters like Dr. Rainbow Johnson from the television series Blackish have shown me the power of seeing oneself reflected in the medical profession. Dr. Johnson's unwavering pride in her identity as a black, female physician served as a source of inspiration and empowerment for me as a young black woman aspiring to enter the field of healthcare. This is important because research shows that minorities, especially black women, are underrepresented in the arena of health providers. I believe this is one of the primary reasons that minorities, especially African Americans and Latinos, do not trust the healthcare system in the United States. They rarely see themselves or have medical providers that can relate to their American experiences. The global COVID-19 pandemic further solidified my resolve to pursue a career in nursing. Witnessing the tireless efforts of healthcare workers on the front lines inspired me to do my part in combating health crises and improving public health outcomes.

My first experience on a college tour was at an HBCU in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It was impressive for many reasons. My family was running from the path of a hurricane, which led us to an available hotel within the city. Looking for places to visit, my parents gave us two options: the University of Alabama or Stillman College. Until now, my siblings and I had only attended schools where we were the minority, so we decided to visit Stillman College. Though we weren’t scheduled for an official tour, the campus admissions office greeted us with open arms and made us feel at home. From that moment until now, HBCUs have been the only option for my siblings and me. I feel at home here at North Carolina A&T University and believe that they have the programs and nurturing to propel my calling to care and to serve others.

I am committed to promoting diversity and inclusivity within the healthcare system because I believe that representation matters now more than ever. As I complete my first year at North Carolina A&T State University, I am filled with a sense of purpose and excitement, knowing I have chosen a school and career that align with my values. Ultimately, I would like to honor my mentors and supporters by empowering other minority women to achieve their aspirations while providing healthcare services and education in underserved communities. And yes, that will include encouraging them to attend an HBCU!
