About   (request update)
Throughout my journey, I have achieved both academic and personal success by staying true to my passions and embracing opportunities for growth. One of my proudest accomplishments has been selling several of my paintings, allowing me to share my artwork with others. Art has always been an outlet for me. It puts me in my "happy" place. It allows my creative juices to flow. My paintings, which are primarily expressionist in style, focus on bold-colored portraits of women expressing a range of emotions. Each piece is a reflection of my personal feelings. I am grateful that others resonate with my work. The experience of seeing my art find a home has been both fulfilling and motivating, reinforcing my belief in the power of creativity.

Life & Professional Aspirations:
"Lakers Hire Dr. Vanessa Brooks as Head Athletic Trainer" was the headline my mom showed me. The article in the LA Times referred to the first Black woman to be dually certified as an athletic trainer and physical therapist. My mother knew this would interest me because that is exactly what I want to become. Even though the number of female athletic trainers has increased, black female trainers still make up a small percentage. I became involved with high school sports when I started as a manager for my school's football and wrestling teams. I have always been pretty athletic, but I primarily participated in dance or gymnastics. While in my AICE Physical Education and Health and Exercise Science classes, I learned about first aid and working with the school's sports teams. It sounded interesting, so I decided to try it, especially since it allowed me to get service hours. Soon, I began to really like what I was doing. I was wrapping injuries, helping players back to the bench, and assisting the coaches and training staff. As a manager, I provided first aid to the athletes, ensured proper hydration, and maintained laundry and inventory of team uniforms. My most memorable experience was leading a mock cold-water immersion to treat heat stroke/exhaustion. It was fulfilling to put my training into practice and showcase my leadership skills. The exercise helped me realize I was making the right choice for a career. I would be able to combine my love for sports and athleticism with health and science. As a physical therapist, I can be an athletic trainer for collegiate and professional sports teams. I can ensure that both student and professional athletes take the proper care and precautions to maintain peak performance and prevent injury. This can be accomplished both on and off the field. I can also work with patients who need to recover from injuries by helping them regain the use of their bodies. Adequate rehabilitation is necessary to restore their quality of life. I may eventually build a training facility, a rehabilitation center, or both. This will allow me to be an entrepreneur and, at the same time, be an example of what is possible.
