Claim To Fame:
Growing up in Pittsburgh, I often felt the weight of systemic inequality and the lack of representation in general, and especially in healthcare. But thanks to my mother, a nurse, and local community programs, I was introduced to opportunities that opened my eyes to the power of education. While interning at West Penn Hospital, I discovered my passion for Obstetrics and Gynecology. This was further solidified when I learned that the Black maternal mortality rate in Pittsburgh is 97% higher than the national average. This number is projected to rise with ongoing legislative shifts, increasing my urgency. I intend to become an OB/GYN to care for Black women and advocate for them. I aim to establish a practice that prioritizes holistic health, serves as an educational hub, and supports advocacy around Black maternal health. Through community workshops and outreach programs, I aim to empower Black students and women with critical knowledge about their health and rights. I also plan to reinvest in the community by offering scholarships to aspiring Black STEM students and creating opportunities to explore international experiences that broaden young minds. Additionally, I am passionate about travel and would cherish the opportunity to share my healthcare skills globally. At the heart of my mission is a desire to build a future where Black children grow up knowing their worth and power. My research interests lie in examining how demographic diversity impacts health outcomes, work that will prepare me to push for more equitable healthcare policies. Still, the road ahead is not without its challenges. Financial hardship has been a constant in my life. After my parents' separation and my father's absence, my mother has shouldered the burden of raising and supporting my twin sister and me. Her mental and emotional strength has been remarkable, but I want to relieve her of the weight of putting both of us through college. I am determined to depend on myself without falling into destabilizing debt.
