Most Memorable Moment:

I pride myself on my persistence & determination, and as a biology major at Howard University, one of my proudest academic achievements was being able to conduct research and visit Cuba. I’m highly motivated to participate in clubs and organizations on campus that push for leadership, communication, and community engagement. The prioritization of global experiences, development of professional networks, and interpersonal skills of the Howard University Global Ambassador Program inspired me. When selected to be a part of and eventually a team captain of this organization, I was also given the opportunity to travel to Cuba. In Cuba, I was able to conduct research on Cuban traditional medicine and its use of natural remedies. Learning about and witnessing firsthand the effects of the US trade embargo placed on Cuba gave me insights into how a country with so few resources was still able to effectively run clinics and strengthened my understanding of global health disparities. The doctors had an emphasis on the community, and also on learning natural remedies. They prioritized prevention and treating the person as a whole, and not only their symptoms. This experience strengthened my desire to want to become a physician and also encouraged me to continue to learn spanish to serve more diverse communities. After practicing phrases in Spanish, reading articles and excerpts about Cuba’s importance and struggles, visiting the country felt like a privilege. I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity and plan to continue to gain first-hand experience in research and diverse fields of science to strengthen my knowledge in my respective career path.
