About   (request update)
I am originally from St. Thomas U.S. Virgin Islands. I moved to Florida when I was 18 years-old to attend Bethune-Cookman College, in Daytona Beach, FL to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. After graduating with my bachelor’s degree, I moved to Orlando and starting working at an agency for abused and neglected children. Two years later, I started my master's degree at the University of Central Florida and earned my master’s degree in mental health counseling, with certificates in marriage and family therapy and play therapy. After graduation, I started working at a large substance abuse and mental health agency as a mental health counselor for 6 1/2 years. I am currently a licensed mental health counselor and national certified counselor. I am currently a clinical manager for a program for at-risk adolescents and their families in the Orlando area. I am happily married to a great man and we do not have any children yet. I suffered from epilepsy all of my life until I had a successful brain surgery in 2012 to remove the part of my brain that was causing the seizures to occur and since then I have been seizure free! I am very grateful to be seizure free and give back sharing my story with other patients and caregivers. I was selected and served as a Patient Research Advisor for a company called PatientsLikeMe with 12 other patients for the inaugural one-year term. Although our term ended in May 2015, we are still very involved with the company to help improve healthcare for all patients. In addition, my journey with epilepsy sparked a research passion in me about the caregiver burden of persons caring for a loved one with a chronic medical condition and the mental health implications of that. I am currently a doctoral student at Walden University pursuing a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision, with an emphasis on counseling and social change. Another one of my research interests is the modern forms of racism and oppression, known as microaggression. I would like to research the mental health implications of microaggression for various minority groups and promote healing among these individuals.
