Vida L. Avery, PhD is a Resource Development Specialist at the Center of Grants Development (CGD), Harris County Department of Education. As a specialist, she promotes CGD’s grant-related services by assisting and working closely with educators, schools and school districts, nonprofit, faith- and community-organizations, bringing in over $70 million to the Houston/Harris County area.

Dr. Avery has presented on the topics of grants, grant making, and philanthropy at local and national conferences. She is the author of Philanthropy in Black Higher Education: A Fateful Hour Creating the Atlanta University System (2013) and co-author of Race, Gender and Leadership in Nonprofit Organizations (2011). Additionally, she teaches courses at Rice University, The Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership.

A native of Houston, Dr. Avery joined Harris County Department of Education following an eleven-year career as an educator, three years as an adjunct professor and two years as a program officer.

She holds a PhD in Educational Policy Studies, with a major in Higher Education and a concentration in Philanthropy from Georgia State University, an MEd and EdS in Education from Brenau University, and a BA in Economics, with a concentration in Business Administration, from Spelman College.

She is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, serving as a board member and the VP of Diversity & Community Outreach, Grant Professionals Association, and the Grant Writers’ Network.

The most memorable moment is the one I took from college. I remember all of the life-long friends I met(when I met them), and the fact that we are still close friends.
