(interview me)
Sandra Brown
Retired Educator, Retired

Location: Philadelphia, PA United States

About   (request update)
Pennsylvanian Mwalimu (Kiswahili for “educator”) Sandra Brown is from a family and community which value enhancing and giving back to that which is African, descriptor for origins of the human race. In spite of very poor and biased counseling advice, Bison Sandra E. Brown landed safely and soundly at Howard University in Washington, DC where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Romance Languages. Her continued pursuit of education resulted in a Masters in Education, Temple University, and Juris Doctorate, Temple University School of Law. She received her supervisory certificate at University of Pennsylvania and her principal’s certification at Cheyney State University of Pennsylvania.

Her professional life spans thirty-one years with the School District of Philadelphia. She was a teacher, the first District-wide Law-Related Education Program Manager, Social Studies Collaborator and Equity Support Coordinator. She entered as an employee through the Teacher Corps Program.

Outside of her family, she is devoted to the African descent and African communities.
She believes in being culturally centered and maintaining historically Black colleges and universities. She sought genealogical closure by having DNA testing for her family. She learned she is linked to the Nigerian Yoruba and of the Cameroon.

Her community involvement has included support for and membership in Thurgood Marshall College Fund, Inc.(its National Alumni Council); the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities annual conference and planning for increased alumni involvement; United Negro College Fund Inter-Alumni Council, Philadelphia Chapter; Howard University (HU) College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Alliance; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; HU Alumni Association (its President, as an ultimate achievement), African American Museum in Philadelphia, Naional Association of University Women, Philadelphia Branch; Association for The Study of African American Life and History, Inc., Philadelphia Heritage Branch; HU Alums on The Hill and HU 2016 And Beyond. She obtained a $10,000 Kresge Foundation for capacity building in philanthropy training of a non-traditional group, namely HBCU alumni associations and organizations and was one of the coordinating leaders for said group’s week-long training at Indiana University’s Center of Philanthropy.

As a community service project since 2009, she leads local HBCU affiliates in a membership drive for the African American Museum in Philadelphia.

Presented with many awards and leadership training certificates for her involvement, she continues her advocacy for the African and African Descent communities.
