Q&A With Frederick Smith

What is the #1 thing you like about HBCUConnect.com?
"Of all the social networks that I'm a member of, HBCUConnect is my favorite. The sole reason is, is that I enjoy connecting with other HBCU students and Alumni. I'm inspired by the responses I get from the HBCUConnect family."

About   (request update)
I am a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University. I'm originally from New Jersey. I began drawing when I was three years old and didn't look back. That fervor I had to draw gave me inspiration to design and build things, more specifically football stadiums.

My Interview Question
In your own words, how do you define success?
Current Whereabouts:
I'm currently serving as the interim Secretary for the graduate chapter of my fraternity. During my leisure time, I'm hanging out with friends and family, just loving life! I can be found in Greensboro, Raleigh/Durham, Charlotte, A-town or Jersey.
Life & Professional Aspirations:
I intend to focus fully on my business. I am going to make it a full time obligation upon graduating from A&T. I'm building in the meantime. While I'm building, I'm also documenting my progress.

Claim To Fame:
I am working on my claim to fame. I firmly believe that my claim to fame will become something monumental, because that is the kind of integrity I shall put into becoming successful in and out side the classroom.
Most Memorable Moment:
I don't know if I would refer to it as a memorable moment, but it certainly was a moment that changed my life. It took place outside of academia. I spent time in New York City, working on the recovery efforts in and around ground zero. I was deployed to NY for eight months. It was a very emotional time for me, especially being one of the young African-American men employed by a federal agency for this disaster. I had to grow up quickly with very little room for error. From the period of July 2001 to December of 2003 was perhaps a benchmark period in my life (to date) because so much occurred. I was employed at a hospital in Jersey City, NJ as a contractor on a temporary basis. The hospital overlooks the NY skyline and Hoboken (NJ). On that disastrous day in September of 2001, I witnessed the calamity that took place in NY. I told myself that if I could do something to help out I would love to do so. In October of that year, my assignment ended with the hospital, I was forced to seek another assignment. With about one week into October, I was notified of a position in NY that was working for a federal agency on the relief efforts in and around ground zero. Without hesitation I agreed to the assignment. It was arduous at times, but the mission at hand was more important and that mission was to provide assistance. I firmly believe I have matured from the experience.
