Michael Gaines is the Program Manager for the Illinois Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention program’s with the Illinois Department of Public Health. The Heart Disease and Stroke Program is working to define the burden of cardiovascular disease, build capacity and finalize a state plan to prevent and control heart disease and stroke in Illinois.

Heart disease and stroke are, respectively, the first and third leading causes of death and also the major causes of disability. In 2003, there were 29,704 deaths in Illinois due to heart disease and 6,883 deaths due to stroke. The total number of deaths from all causes during the year was 104,930. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is awarded nearly $1.5 million in federal funds to prevent and control heart disease and stroke in Illinois.

The program includes three components: Heart Disease and Stroke Program; Illinois CAPTURE Stroke Registry; and Great Lakes Regional Stroke Network.

Michael Gaines received his Bachelors from Grambling State University, Louisiana and his Masters in Public Administration at the University of Illinois at Springfield. Michael is the Past President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Springfield, Illinois chapter. He also serves as the Board Member with the Springfield Urban League, the Springfield Boys and Girls Club and Springfield NAACP. Michael is also a mentor with the Youth Service Bureau and Rutledge Youth Farm. He is a deacon at Union Baptist Church. Michael was awarded the Forty under Forty-Leadership Award from the Springfield Business Journal, Springfield Citizens Award from Springfield Visitors Bureau and the Walk the Talk award form Men against Violent Crimes against Women.
