Cathryn Stanley is more than a triple threat as far as talent goes! She has been performing for over 19 years, and is truly the definition of a multi-entertainer.
Cathryn began her career on the stage at the tender age of three at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, and continued on the path of the performing arts ever since. She took the audience by storm at The Pingry School, where she attended for 7th -12th grades, landing roles like Annie in “Annie, Jr.,” the Minstrel in “Once upon a Mattress,” the Leading Player in “Pippin,” and Little Becky Two Shoes in “Urinetown.” Cathryn performed in her first off-Broadway production with the Ujamaa Black Theater as lead actress, Mary Jones, in Titus Walker’s “The Gospel of the Harlem Renaissance” under the direction of Tajmal Walker. Using the momentum from her off-Broadway debut, and her natural drive and divinely-inspired talents, Cathryn propelled forward, writing, directing, and producing her first off-Broadway play, “Down the River.” Since the running of her off-Broadway production, Cathryn has gone on to produce and star as the lead actor in the stage play, “Peace Be With Me.” She has recently finished writing a dramatic screenplay, entitled, “Time after Yesterday,” which she plans to direct and produce beginning in late December 2011. She has also been developing a host of other independent films, plays, and musical scripts and soundtracks.
Cathryn was quite the musical child, as she could whistle before she could even talk! This singer/songwriter released her first underground album, entitled, Soul Odyssey in 2006, collaborating with a childhood friend of hers, forming the duet, KaCi. She records and performs locally with fellow artists, Hass the Mayor and Hollen Madd under 840 Entertainment, as well as a host of artists under Starface Entertainment. Cathryn wrote and recorded two songs on the “Peace Be With Me” soundtrack, and co-wrote and recorded two songs on the soundtrack—totaling her contributions to the album at 4 out of 9 songs.
Beyond the artistic strengths that she has, is the heart of an educator. At the age of 23, Cathryn graduated from Teacher's College, Columbia University in New York City, where she recently completed her Masters Degrees in Elementary Inclusive Education and Teaching Students with Disabilities. Cathryn received a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Hampton University in Virginia, which she completed in only three years, graduating Summa Cum Laude. During her undergraduate experience, she was able to study abroad in Costa Rica, teaching 3rd grade English at a local elementary school in Puerto Limon.
This young African-American sensation is sure to be a household name in months to come. She shares her heart for YHWH, living an optimistic and productive life, and emitting positive energy in the world around her openly with others. All around, Cathryn is an awesome role model for young girls across America! Cathryn is interested in future projects that will allow her to capture and create theater, movie, and television roles, as well as write music. There are no limits to what this talented performer, writer/director can do. She exudes immense creative energy, which is accompanied by her superb work ethic and dedication to her craft. With a motivation and drive that propel this young woman forward, her possibilities are certainly limitless.
Current Whereabouts:
Theater and Film Production (Writing, Directing, Producing, Acting...)
My name is Cathryn Stanley, and I’m a 23-year-old filmmaker from Irvington, New Jersey, with 20 years of performing experience under my belt. Maya Angelou says, "There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you." Well, since I have many stories inside of me to share with the world, I recently founded and am currently operating Big Sis/Lil Sis Entertainment Company with my 25-year-old sister, Christina; which we run out of New York City and Los Angeles.
With an unparalleled passion for writing, directing, and performing, I have been working diligently on a new project — my first independent film — “A Time After Yesterday.” The film, which was inspired my own life experiences coping with loss, as well as, my observations of human behavior, shares the journeys of two girls, Summer and Winter, who struggle to overcome their dark pasts in order to find their way to love, healing, and the bonds of true friendship. Overall, the storyline focuses on complex relationships that exist between people of various socio-economic statuses, modern family dynamics, and resilience. It also touches on the important underlying themes of pride, loneliness, rejection and an increasingly growing societal ill—homelessness.
In effort to raise funds for the continuation and completion of this film, as well as to introduce this project to the world, we are hosting a Red Carpet Pre-Premiere Reception on February 3, 2012 at 7:00pm at the Robert Treat Hotel (Atlantic-Hudson Room). At this event, there will be live performances by artists on the movie soundtrack, an art exhibit of the movie’s signature pieces created by artist Bishop Green, as well as the world premiere of the extended movie trailer, and more! I invite you to join us for this event, and hope that you will continue to learn more about the production of “A Time After Yesterday.”
