By profession, I am a Recruiter and Admissions Associate for Berkeley College in Midtown Manhattan. I have been an administrator in the higher education arena for 10 years now.
By trade, I am a Spoken Word Performance Artist, Event Hostess, and a Youth Workshop Facilitator. I currently host and perform in a monthly artistic expression showcase called Rhapsodies in Black at a venue in Harlem, and you can always catch me at the neighborhood spoken word open mic. I have developed and facilitated youth workshops that focus on image and self esteem, the negative images of women in hip hop, and on personal responsibility to the community. And I am also an aspiring novelist, finally trying my hand at my first manuscript.
I feel blessed beyond explanation for the path the Most High chose for me. I am living my spoken existence and doing it on my terms with God at the wheel! He is so amazing! Hope all of you are safe and happy. Happiness is a choice, choose it!

Life & Professional Aspirations:
I hope to become a published author and renowned poet.
Being one of the first sisters at CSU to sport locs in 1994 when it wasn't so popular. It still saddens me that brothers and sisters were so adverse to my natural crowning glory, but I had to be true to me. Before I graduated there were so many people sporting locs that it seemed like a distant memory when people said all sorts of ignorant comments to me about my locs. I guess times changed and being natural became more popular among young sisters than wearing chemically relaxed hairstyles, weaves, and french rolls! We all have Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu to thank for that transiiton!
Most Memorable Moment:
It is very hard to say what my MOST memorable moment was at CSU. There are so many that come to mind. ONE of the most memorable, however, was the year the university faced its greatest adversity, greater than the tornado of 1979. We were in danger of losing our university, of seeing its doors close forever. As a student, I became very involved, as did many of the students. We protested and wrote letters and visited the state capitol on numerous occassions. It was a struggle that made me appreciate my education that much more. I learned a great deal about state funding and how the nation views HBCUs in general. Being a part of that struggle made me understand better that anything worth keeping is worth fighting for. The three punches at the end of the school song meant more to me at that time than they ever had before. FOR GOD, FOR CENTRAL, FOR STATE!

Hi Dawn! Wow! Your Bio was one of the most Amazing I have ever read on HBCU! I truly enjoyed every word. Thanks for sharing your story. If you wrote a book, I would be the first to read it. Other than God, there is no Greater Love than the Love Centralians feel for "Thee Central State Univ" We are all Family, no matter what generation. My Father attended Wilberforce for 2yrs. There was no CSU when he went. He told me some awesome stores. I plan on checking out your website. Take care and may God Continue To Bless Your Process, Dawn!!! For God!!! For Central!! For State!
