I’d like to acquaint you with me, Joseph Kelly III. I am the oldest child of my parents Joseph Kelly Jr. and Betty Cross Kelly. I have one sister and two brothers I was born In Jacksonville, FL on October 19, 1964. I was raised on the eastside of Jacksonville by my mother, the majority of my life my mother was the only parent raising me. My mother worked very hard to provide for my sister, brother and myself. My mother instilled in my siblings and I that hard work and education was what we needed in order to be successful and achieve in life. My was father has help me develop my skills to become a man he demonstrated to me that good work ethics was need to prosper into manhood with his long career of 40 years as a foreman with United States Gypsum Co was an example to working hard in life will pay off in the end. My parents gave me all the tools that I need in life to start on my life long journey to success. My mother’s made sure that I would receive a high school education. I graduated from Andrew Jackson in the class of 1983. In high school I participated in the marching tiger band for three years under the leadership of Freddie McClain who was a very positive role model in my life. Mr. McClain was the first person to give me the interest in becoming an educator with the conversations that he would have with his band students about life and how education could become a successful career. Those conversations help make me the person that I am today and makes me want to share those experience with other students.
After high school graduation I attended Florida Community College of Jacksonville for a year and when the summer came I decided to take a break from school. I needed to find employment to help with financial situation that I had created by only attending school. I was in as a student going to school and not working was a strain on my family. To help ease the load I had find a way to support myself at that time because I had reached adulthood and my mother was still supporting my brother and sister. I got employment at Winn Dixie and was employed there for the next 10 years. I worked in different areas of the store and several store locations, working my way up to the last position of customer service manager. While employed with Winn Dixie I had the opportunity to travel every weekend to Tallahassee, FL to visit my best friend from high school who was a student at Florida A&M University. I had the experience of how college students enjoy football season and the campus atmosphere. My friend Eugene would always encourage me to move to Tallahassee and try to find work and I could work my way through school and complete my education.
After a long break I returned to school in 1994 at Edward Waters for a semester while employed with the Duval County Public School system and had to withdraw in the winter term. I took classes at FCCJ along the way into completing my education this year from the University of Phoenix in June. I am presently working towards a Master of Art in Education in Curriculum and Instruction. I have work very hard at completing the necessary education that I need to make a transition into a new career as an educator. I was employed with the Duval County Public School system as an Exceptional Student Education Teacher at Palm Avenue Exception Student Center. I have enjoyed working with trainable mentally handicap students. Being an Afro-American male I think that I have done a tremendous job as a positive role model for the students I have worked with in the past. I have plans to stay in the area of education in the future, believing that life-long learning is something I will always be a part of me. I hope my hard work will be an inspiration to some others to never give up and keep on trying to reach their goals and dreams.
