Most Memorable Moment:
I am not enrolled in college yet but my most memorable accomplishment was during My 8th grade year, when my best friend and I established an after school tutoring program at our inner city charter school (Y.M.C.A Service Learning Academy in Detroit, MI) so that the younger kids could both improve their grades and have positive role models to look up to. However, starting this program proved to be more of a challenge as we had to overcome such obstacles as finding sponsors and advisors but most importantly we had to put together a proposal for the Governor which stated the goal of our program. This was done so that we could receive state funding. I believe that undertaking such a daunting task at an early age, helped better prepare me for the real world. When instituting any type of program, I have learned that choosing the proper name is one of the most important elements. My partner and I chose the name "Learning with Style" to let the children know that they could be themselves and still learn. We also taught them that learning can be fun and that there is nothing wrong with getting extra help. With the right advertisement and the schools full support, we were able to send notes home informing the parents about the new program being offered to grades K-5. As a result, we received over 100 applicants that began receiving tutoring after school for three hours, twice a week. The Learning with Style tutoring program gained much attention because it was the first student founded tutoring program in Michigan to get state funding. It was also the only tutoring program in a Detroit school that was free of charge. The Learning with Style tutoring program showed many people that students who get a "little" help can make a difference, but it was the difference that I made in the students lives that I found to be the most rewarding.
