About   (request update)
Arté Stephon Hogan was born Tuesday, 27 September 1988 to Will Wells, Jr. and Nicole Hogan. When Arte was born he lived with his mother and grandmother (Cynthia H. Birdsong, Nicole‘s mother). While he was just six months old he was rushed to the hospital because he stopped breathing. After he was made to breathe again the doctors said that he had a small hole in his heart and that he had a heart murmur. In November of 1989 Cynthia Birdsong had passed away at the young tender age of 38. When she passed, the doctors said that she had two types of cancer: breast and blood. At the time of her death, Nicole was 17 years old and Arte was just 18 months old. When Cynthia died, the State of Tennessee gave Mrs. Willie (Derry) Wilson temporary custody of Arte. Mrs. Wilson is Cynthia’s eldest sister. Mrs. Wilson cared for Arte until he was 10 years old, before he entered into full state’s custody on March 1,1999. When he was 8 years old, he started singing with the Nashville Youth Chorus. He was with this group until he turned 10 years old.
Upon entering into states custody, Arte was moved around a lot. From 1 March 1999 to 22 May 2005, Arte was moved from many foster homes to several group homes. Arte has lived in different cities in the state of Tennessee. He has lived in Memphis, Clarksville and Lebanon, just to name a few. He has lived in four different foster homes and two different group homes. Arte spent most of his time in Memphis, Tennessee. He was at a group home through Youth Villages. He was there for about 18 months. While at Dogwood Youth Villages, he started to sing again. He performed in two talent shows that where held between the 8 cottages that where there. Arte and 3 other guys from his cottage started a group call Swan Six. They came up with this name because the cottage that they lived in was called Cottage Six and they were going to perform the song by R. Kelly, “I Believe I Can Fly”. This was the first time that he was in a group. He was the lead singer and Swan Six won 1st Place that year. The second year that the talent show took place, the entire cottage performed, with him as the lead singer once again. The cottage preformed the song “Celebration”. The cottage fell short by one vote and came in 2nd place.
When Arte was about 12 he was moved back to Clarksville, Tennessee. This time he was put in a foster home and not a group home. He stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Lyles. Mr. Lyles is a minister and a fireman. Mrs. Lyles is a school teacher at Kenwood Middle School. While he was there, he was baptized. He was also given another chance to sing lead to R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly”. Living with the Lyles, Arte traveled to North Carolina to put on a play about a spiritual revolution in a new world. Arte was with the Lyles for about 6 months before he was moved to Nashville, Tennessee. There, he was introduced to Mrs. Malone. Mrs. Malone was a single woman whose husband had died 15 years earlier. When Arte entered into the 7th grade, he started to take piano lessons. By the time he was in the 9th grade he could read music but played better by ear. While in the 7th and 8th grades, he was a part of a public speaking group called forensics. He learned the “I Have a Dream” speech as well as “Go Down Death.” Arte gave his all whenever he preformed his speeches. Arte has recited the “I Have a Dream” speech at church black history programs and even at a national church convention. When he was in the 10th grade, he was asked by his old middle school principal as well as the Whites Creek High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (AFJROTC) unit to come to the 8th graders graduation. Arte was asked to speak to the 8th graders about high school and education. At that time, Arte was the rank of C/SSgt.
He was very active with the JROTC unit at Whites Creek. He was the Chaplin for the unit when they went to Dayton, Ohio for the fall trip of 2003. When the unit returned, Major Williamson named Arte the Squadron Chaplin. He went on numerous trips with the squadron including Tampa Bay, Florida; Charleston, South Carolina; and St. Louis, Missouri. When he final ended ROTC he had received the following awards: Airman of the Month; NCO of the Month; Outstanding Flight Commander; and Tuskegee Airman of the Year. Arte was not able to walk across the stage at the Whites Creek High School graduation. He was able to receive his high school diploma from Cohn Adult High School, where he was coached in vocal training by Mr. Johnson.
On 21 October 2007, Arte Hogan was licensed as a Preacher of the Gospel at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church where the pastor is Rev. Derrick Moore. Arte now works with youth and teaches young people about the word of God.
