Q&A With Will Saunders

If you could change anything at all in your life, and it didn
"This has changed over time. Years ago, I had a long list of things I'd change. Today, I wouldn't change one thing. I'm pleased with the person I am and who I have become. Each thing about me has worked collectively to shape who I am. So, no, I wouldn't want to change anything at all. "

Interviewed by danny walker 07/31/13

What place does Computer Science have in K-12 education?
"Computer Science has an integral place in K-12 education. I remember studying a man by the name of John Henry Martin who created a program called “Writing to Read” back in the late 1970s. He established a computer program, partnering with IBM, which used general computer science education to deliver the instruction to children. He believed that educators should be using the computer to teach kids to read by first teaching them to write. I think that these days, we do kids a disservice by not exposing them to technology, computer science, instructional delivery using computer science principles, etc. I think this is essential. "

Interviewed by Steve Williams 03/07/11

Do you believe in true friendship and is it forever?
"Yes, I do believe in true friendship and it is definitely forever; however it takes the concerted effort of all parites. My mom has maintained a friendship with several people she knew as a child. They are all in their mid-70s. Their families and my family carry on as if we were related. Our families are meshed together. We have family friendships that have gone on for more than 60 years. That’s awesome. So, yes. Its absolutely possible. "

Interviewed by ROBERT FRANCE 06/03/10

What is it that you value most?
"It’s hard to say what it is I value most. My first knee-jerk response was to say knowledge. But then, regardless what it is I know or don’t know, I’m leaning toward health as being more valuable. "

Interviewed by Will Marion 05/19/10

Interviewed by Clarence Goss, Jr. 05/01/10

Do you live for others or do you live for yourself?
"Definitely for myself. I know that in the end, I am the only one who has to live with the consequences of my choices. So, even if I consider other people's ideas, my final choices are all for ME."

Interviewed by Donny King 04/05/10

"Honestly my first thing I noticed was your city: I used to live in Laurel, right behind the Laurel Mall. "

Interviewed by Aaron Z 03/18/10

what steps are you taking to make sure your life stays on the right path?
"I think the most important thing I can do to make sure I stay on track and on the right path is by holding fast to my faith in God. By doing this, it helps me to keep the right, positive people in my life who always have my best interest in mind. The more we keep people around us who think like we do and who have similar goals, the more likely we’ll be the type of support we each need to help one another do the right thing and keep focused on what’s important. "

Interviewed by Danielle Smart 03/02/10

HBCU Bands Are The Best Because???????
"HBCU bands are the best because they have the greatest rhythm, soul, and creativity. "

Interviewed by Cornelius Wilcox 03/02/10

What makes us good leaders?
"This may sound rather corny, but I think that a trait of a good leader is knowing when to follow. Just because you’re in a position of leadership does not mean that you have all the answers and know all the solutions. Someone subordinate to you could have a certain level of expertise that you do not have. You have to be secure in yourself to be able to relinquish some control and power and allow that subordinate to demonstrate their expertise. Failing to do so could cause you to have a level of success that is less than what you desire. It takes a certain level of strength and character as a person to recognize and the most successful leaders always follow this. "

Interviewed by De Andre West 01/28/10

Interviewed by Kevin Hickson 01/26/10

What is your passion in life?
"My passion in life is helping out those less fortunate than me, or reaching back to help the youth that are coming along behind me. That’s the most important thing anybody can do."

Interviewed by James Bland 01/26/10

What inspires you to do better in your life?
"The thing that inspires me to do better is seeing the accomplishments of people who have half as much as I do, with more reasons to give up than I do, yet they achieve a mountain of greatness. Those types of achievements hit me hard and when I see someone work so hard to get where they are when they starting out with virtually nothing and then look at all the opportunities that I have now and have had in the past, I feel not just inspired but also compelled to put forth more effort to achieve all that I have as my goals. "

Interviewed by karla swinton 12/17/09

WHY DO I ATTRACT THE SAME NEGATIVE THINGS IN MY LIFE ????????
"I believe that we all attract the same things (whether positive or negative) in our lives because on some level, we add fuel to them. We feed things, even when we don’t realize it. That’s why I always advocate routinely doing an inventory of ourselves, our choices, our behaviors, and the people we call our friends. If we routinely have struggles, then maybe we need to clean ourselves up and make changes. "

Interviewed by Christopher Duncan 12/11/09

What are the benefits of this site as a black woman?
"The greatest benefit is to network with other individuals with a positive outlook and with broad broad experiences. Becasue, the people in life who are most successful are good at networking and staying connected with people from all walks of life all over. This site can help do that. "

Interviewed by LaTisha Moore 12/08/09

Can I become healthier and wealthier working with Ardyss?

Interviewed by Arthur Burks 12/08/09

When was the last time you had a credit "check up"
"This is something that is very important to me and I keep on top of my credit and get a 'check up" on a quarterly basis. I encourage people to do the same. People can get a copy of their credit report once a year for free. However, over that free one, you pay a nominal fee. I advise everybody to pay that nominal fee and get their credit report every 2-3 months and review it from beginning to end. I do this. I don't like surprises. "

Interviewed by Hardest Working Woman in Credit 12/04/09

How do you feel about homosexuals attending church?
"I think homosexuals really should create their own church for worshipping and praising. The church generally does not accept homosexuals. Homosexuals are often ostracized and not made to feel welcomed. Just like blacks did years ago (they separated out and created their own places of worship because whites did not fully include them in worship) homosexuals should do the same thing. "

Interviewed by Andrew J Turner 12/04/09

What do you consider to be good reading material?
"Well for me, I think it’s important to develop an interest in different genres and different categories of reading material, especially things that you’re not accustomed to reading. Both fiction and non-fiction books should be included and you should look for authors of varying backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, etc. In my opinion the more we do this, the broader we become as people. "

Interviewed by Julius Evans 12/04/09

If you had to chosse how to live your life which one would it be; Love / Happiness / or Alone ?
"That's hard, because you can be happy and still be alone, you can love and still be happy. I don't think you have to be one with out the other. You can have them simultaneusly. I don't want to settle. Life is about making it all work for you. "

Interviewed by Elvin Young 10/02/09

What motivates you to succeed each week?
"The thing that keeps me motivated is when people have doubts in my abilities and try to block my progress. Although it gets me angry, it makes me work twice as hard so that I don’t fail. The more criticism I get, the more motivated I become. "

Interviewed by Mark Williams 09/30/09

What do you believe needs to be done in order to substantially uplift the Americans of African descent
"I think the best way to help each one of us be more uplifted is to instill a spirit of giving and helping of others. It’s amazing how much progress I make myself when I take time to help someone unconditionally and listen to their problems without judgment and just be there for someone even if I don’t do anything special. Helping people is great therapy and can be very empowering. It goes in line with one old Buddhist principle that I think applies here: “Life is cyclical and all that we give out comes back to us tenfold; therefore if we all would give out that which we seek, then everyone’s needs would be met!” "

Interviewed by James Lockhart 09/30/09

Why are you on this site?
"I am here primarily to connect with others and to network with positive minded people. I feel like sometimes, success and progress is related to knowing the right people who can share information or opportunities with each other. We really are a community of helping beings and if we could network more and be more open to new connections we might go further in life. "

Interviewed by Marques Burnett 09/30/09

Where do we see ourselves in 20 years?
"I think we can be miles ahead where we are now, if we only work together with each other. No matter how smart we are and no matter how many degrees we have behind our name, our success will be much better and easier if we network with each other and help each other. "

Interviewed by Calvin Dixon 09/25/09

What is your opinion on religion?
"Religion is whatever you want from it. Since the beginning of time, there have been a number of different religions, and each one has things about them to appeal to different people. Some people practice a certain religion and then complain about what’s wrong with it. I say, rather than complain, go find a different one that you can follow. If you can’t find an already existing religion that suits you, start your own. In the end, I feel that there is only one God. The different religions are just different ways for people to worship that God. But there is only one supreme being and one heaven. People just need to find their own way to understand it and share it. "

Interviewed by Martina Carroll 09/25/09

r u willing too change
"Change is so hard to do, but I know that without change, we will forever stay right where we are. So, yes, I am definitely willing to change. I am always trying to grow and be better every day."

Interviewed by dionte robinson 09/25/09

What make you happy and satisfied? Are you happy with yourself?
"Yes I am happy. The things that make me happy are spending time around good people who also are happy. Birds of a feather, you know? "

Interviewed by Lou Thomas 09/25/09

What type of people are you looking for on this....and hopefully i can be that
"I’m looking to network with others and make genuine friendships. I believe the best things we get in life come from who we know, regardless how smart we are or how many degrees we have. We need to help each other and share information with each other in order to have the most success in life. "

Interviewed by michael price 09/25/09

What Makes the "Great" Great?
"I think the thing that makes people “GREAT” is their willingness to embrace and accept others unconditionally. I mean, some people may make more money than others or some people may be more attractive than others or taller or whatever, but we all deserve to be loved and accepted. Great people understand this and don’t judge others superficially. "

Interviewed by Jae Rozier 09/25/09

What things can we do on HBCUConnect to make it a better site?
"I think more can be done to let people know this site exists. Not enough is done to market it. That's one thing I believe can be done differently. "

Interviewed by Reginald Culpepper 09/25/09

Who can a strong and motivated man team up with to thrive in life?
"Really, a strong and motivated man can have endless success in life. Although it can help him to team up with other strong and motivated individuals, it isn’t necessary. A strong a motivated man can achieve greatness beyond belief all by himself. "

Interviewed by Qudamah Coleman 09/09/09

How do you think I will adjust to college?
"You will adjust fine. It’s hard sometimes, but as you learn new things, make new friends, and enjoy your new freedom as you move into becoming a responsible and educated adult, you realize that you are adjusting with no problems at all. "

Interviewed by Natalie Sutton 09/09/09

Where have you travel ? Name some great historic places to visit.
"The most recent historic place I visited is Philadelphia. I visited there to see lots of historical spots, the stomping grounds for Benjamin Franklin, the Liberty Bell, lots of ethnic culture, and a nice place to relax. "

Interviewed by Kaye Vann-Anderson 09/09/09

What do you look for in a friend?
"I look for friends who are independent, or working on becoming independent, people who have integrity and believe in doing the right thing even when nobody’s watching, people who live their lives with self-dignity, and people who have no problem being kind to others even when they don’t get anything in return. "

Interviewed by Lauren Gross 09/09/09

Can you love me like Jesus?
"That's one trait I have learned to master: loving and accepting others without judging them. That's a trait that people lack these days. I practice the art of loving people, even those I do not know. Yes, I do love you like Jesus. "

Interviewed by Ryan J. Major 09/09/09

What makes you so different from anyone else?
"I am different from others in that I have mastered the art of accepting people for who they are without judging them for superficial things. That’s a trait that is lacking in our community. "

Interviewed by Shawn Odom 09/09/09

What was the most memorable lesson that you've been taught by your role model, mentor, etc?
"I think the most memorable less I learned is that real learning doesn’t come in a box, which is how some people teach. We need to learn to think for ourselves and think in a broad, abstract way. That’s how successful people do it. They learn to be creative in their thinking and are not limited by their own thinking. I have learned that if I am to be successful, I need to use my own mind to create endless opportunities. "

Interviewed by Tanya McCutcheon 09/09/09

Hi, may i really get to know you?
"How's it going? Hope you had a good Labor Day. "

Interviewed by John Okenwa 09/09/09

what make you "special"
"I think the thing that makes me special is that I never see myself as being better than others and I do not consider myself beneath anyone else either. I accept everybody as they come. "

Interviewed by eddie moton 09/09/09

What sets YOU apart from the crowd?
"I think the thing that sets me apart from the crowd is that I’m not inspired by the crowd. I make decisions that I feel are important to me and my future without regard to what people think of me. Further more, I try to be accepting of others and I never see myself as being better than others and I do not consider myself beneath anyone else. "

Interviewed by Aldd Kwame Cyril 09/09/09

What do you think about straight Male Cheer Leaders? Because I am one!
"I am learning to be open minded. Times change and so do people. There was a point in time when straight males did not wear earrings or a pony tail, and a point in time when straight women didn’t wear pants. Today, this is common for straight men and women to do this. The same is true of straight male cheerleaders. This is more of a melting pot society, and people of all flavors are doing more things that were once limited to certain groups. As we continue to be a more all inclusive society, I think we all should learn to be more accepting of the uniqueness of others. "

Interviewed by Majik Moody 07/31/13

What do i need to avoid doing, since this is my first year of college?
"I say avoid taking certain elective classes just because you need to have an elective. In stead, take electives in classes that you are interested in or take electives in classes that are some way related to your major or your minor. "

Interviewed by Shaun Nichols 09/01/09

What is you motivation for being college?
"I wanted to go to college to make myself better and to create more opportunities for myself. "

Interviewed by Sheamon McCants 09/01/09

what will you do to keep a friendship
"A friendship is important, as meeting good people helps us to grow as individuals. So, I think it is important to keep reaching out to each other and showing love and support and being honest and genuine at all times. That’s what makes the best friendships. "

Interviewed by asore oba sopein 09/01/09

What brings you to HBCU Connect?
"I am always interested in positive minded brothers and sisters who are doing good things. This is a great place where we can connect with each other and network and get to know other good people. "

Interviewed by L D Horne 09/01/09

What is the worst and best experience you have with any professor you can remember?
"I’m not sure what the worst experience is, but the best one is when I had gone out partying the night before a final exam in a 8 o’clock class. The next morning, I woke at 10:30 and had missed the final. Man, I was all stressed out. But I went to the professor and explained what I did and he let me take the exam in his office rather than give me an incomplete like he normally would have done. He said that because I came to him and was honest, he gave me the benefit of the doubt. The thing that was cool about it is that he was always such a strict hard nose kind of professor. I never expected him to give me a break. "

Interviewed by Joseph Merkerson 08/24/09

what do you think about the economy
" I believe the economy is driven by big business. When I look at the fall of big companies such as Enron, E.F., Hutton, and WorldCom following fraudulent business practices, it rings clear to me that the heads of these companies contribute to the problems with our economy. When each company lays off workers, it has a trickle down effect. For example, you have 1000 people in a given city who get laid off, that means they aren’t spending money in that city anymore and that in turn effects other companies in that city who may end up having to lay off workers because business is down and so on and so on. I have long believed that the problems can directly be blamed on poorly run businesses. These businesses engage in illegal practices that result in them cutting down their operation or even going out of business, it’s a domino effect. Greater government oversight and independent audits are needed to stop it from happening. If we nip it in the bud from the front end, then maybe we’d have a more thriving economy. "

Interviewed by LaShawndra Green 08/24/09

How do you think Dr. Marting Luther King, Jr was able to overcome the nightmare of racism as he was having a dream of freedom and equality?
"I don’t think he was able to overcome the nightmare. I think he faced that nightmare head on and was frightened by that nightmare every night and day. But he fought it because he wanted to make life better for his children than what he had to endure himself. He wanted to make the world better for his children. That was his motivation to keep going in spite of that nightmare. "

Interviewed by Sterling Dixon 08/24/09

What is the one thing that would most help to create social equality between blacks and whites?
"The one thing to promote equality between blacks and whites is the realization that we all are the same, and the only difference between us is the color of our skin. We all have the same emotions and dreams, and are motivated by the same things. We needlessly get caught up in how the color of our skin some how makes us unworthy of joint fellowship. I would love to get blacks and whites to realize that we really are no different from one another and we all could achieve so much more greatness, not just professionally but personally, if we could get beyond the petty differences that hold us back. "

Interviewed by Steve Williams 08/18/09

If you can what would you do to make your community/world better ?
"The one thing I’d do to make my community better is get our people to do more together than always fighting and tearing each other down and killing each other. There is a lot of fighting within the black community and we don’t do enough to help each other. I would wish I could help people realize the importance of extending their hand to each other and doing more to be helpful as well as not being scared to ask for help. The only way we ALL can achieve greatness is if we ALL help each other, and until we realize that, we will continue to be failures. Even if some of us make it, it really doesn’t mean a thing if we don’t reach back and help others. "

Interviewed by A J 08/18/09

What made you all decide to attend a HBCU?
"I actually decided to attend an HBCU because I was in a funk and didn't know what to do and didn't know what to major in. So, I just went to keep myself busy. After I got there, I was glad I made the choice to attend an HBCU. "

Interviewed by Dominique Williams 08/05/09

What legacy would you like to leave to others?
"My legacy is currently on paper, and hopefully I can someday soon put it into practice. I want to establish a network of community systems to help those kids aging out of the foster care system. There are little services to assist them and many end up with troubled lives. Although there are independent living situations and although some of them maintain relationships with some of the foster families they met through the years, a lot of them end up on their own without the kind of support that many people in traditional families receive from support systems. I envision a system that assists these young people get established, with the caveat that they offer themselves as a mentor for the next group of foster kids coming along. The problem with making this happen is too many people are disinterested in such a venture and do not think there is a need for such a service. But I have been doing lots of research and I found out that about 15% of the homeless population is made up of homeless young adults who were in the foster care system. I wish to create a legacy that would address this problem. "

Interviewed by Leah Wiggins 08/03/09

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
"The innocence of children are what inspire me the most. I look at how young children who are playing together have fun and aren’t aware of the individual differences that bother adults. It doesn’t matter that someone is overweight or black or white or otherwise different. Kids enjoy one another and are oblivious to those differences. Too bad that as they get older, they lose that innocence and their objectivity diminishes. Adults need to learn to embrace that youthful beauty. I look at them and feel inspired to be more acceptant of others. "

Interviewed by Dawn Renee 06/09/09

What do you plan to do with computers?
"Computers are amazing. I would love to see computers be used to help people with disabilities. Computers could be their eyes and ears, their arms and legs. Many devices that are used for those with disbilities don't make full use of computers. We could do so much more to help people. "

Interviewed by Arvis Johnson 06/09/09

What are youg goals?
"I want to study anatomy, fitness, and nutrition and become a part time personal trainer. My goal is to help people make better choices with their health, their diet, and guide them to proper exercises for healthier living. "

Interviewed by Terrell Seward 06/09/09

Do you believe it
"In theory yes, I do believe it. But in reality, I have doubts. It's my opinion that in the field of publishing, it is very political and knowing the right people and being properly connected is the key to being a successful author."

Interviewed by Anike Bay 05/01/09

How will your dream change your generation?
"My dream is to always find ways to help my brothers and sisters trying to get someplace in life. If we all reach out to help each other, we can all achieve our dreams, because none of us can make it all by ourselves. Everybody owes it to themselves and to their ancestors, to do something for someone else. In other words, be a blessing to be blessed. "

Interviewed by Jordan Harris 04/13/09

How is yo personality
"My personality is laid back, free-spirited, and drama-free. Just cool and chill. "

Interviewed by Sherard Ellis 04/10/09

What must black people do to unite?
" I have long believed that there are many reasons why black people cannot unite, chief among them is a lack of love and belief in themselves. Many people don’t have enough faith in their own abilities, making it hard to embrace others. People need to take an honest look at themselves and identify their weaknesses so they may get stronger individually, an only then will we as a community be able to connect with a united front. "

Interviewed by George Cook 04/10/09

Are you well-educated or highly educated or both? Is there a difference?
"In my opinion, there is no difference between being well-educated and highly educated other than semantics. Both of those terms have to do with having the ability to measure up against others in a given career field, being able to compete, and being efficient and productive in the workplace. Whether you call it well-educated or highly educated doesn’t matter. It’s all about how well you are able to shine to your managers (or managers in organizations where you’d like to work). And I think that I’m educated, though I would not classify myself as being well-educated/highly educated. In this changing world, there is always plenty of room to gather more education regardless how much education one may already have. "

Interviewed by James McTyre Jr. 03/12/09

Interviewed by QUAME E QUAME 02/25/09

What is your version of the perfect significant other?
" I think that the perfect significant other is someone who gives you a smile when you don’t have one of your own; someone who will listen when you talk, and will talk when you try to listen; the perfect significant other is someone who knows that the perfect relationship is generally 50/50 – although on some days, it may be 60/40 or 30/70 or 90/10. There is no magical ingredient or recipe to reach perfection in the relationship, and the perfect significant other understands this, yet is willing to work with me collaboratively to make it the best that it can become, and together we will try to make it come as close to perfection as humanly possible. This is MY version of the perfect significant other!"

Interviewed by Jazmine Coates 02/25/09

where are you from
"Originally, I was from georgia, was born in Atlanta. But I now live in Maryland just outside of Washington, DC. I work in DC and my college is in DC too. "

Interviewed by Chris Perry 02/25/09

What is your passion?
"My greatest passion is giving pleasure and happiness to others so that I may receive it myself. “Be a blessing to be blessed” is how I live my life. That is how we thrive. We cannot do it on our own. We all need each other - yes it does take a village to raise children and adults. "

Interviewed by Paula Perry 02/24/09

Do You Believe We need Bring Prayer back into our Communities ?
"I believe that prayer is essential. Not only does prayer give praise to God, but it also helps to instill hope in people who may be feeling destitute. When I am feeling down or had a bad day and I bow down to pray, I feel uplifted. If more people prayed, it would help enrich their lives and as a community, if we all prayed more, we collectively would have better and more productive lives – because when we feel enriched, we are more creative and positive thinking and ultimately more successful. "

Interviewed by Min Sammy Jackson 02/24/09

What sets yu apart from everybody else??
"This is an interesting question. I think that in my quest to exert my individualism and show my identity and be unique and try to set myself apart from others, I realize that I am not unlike others around me. Though we each have our own traits that seek to make us different, I don’t think we really all that different. Each of us has passions and dreams and ambitions, things we aspire to do and be. Even if some of us don’t know what they are, we still have them within us. Whether we want to be a doctor, accountant, engineer, or some other ‘different’ professional, and regardless out method for sharpening our skills and gaining our knowledge, the passions that drive us are what make us all alike. The more I realize it, I think we all aren’t that much different from one another. "

Interviewed by Sarah Thornton 02/17/09

How is/was your college experience
"My college experience was awesome. It could have been better though. I only wish that I had participated in more clubs and activities. I did focus a lot on my classes and graduated with honors, but the missing piece was the other stuff outside of classes. That’s the one thing I would do differently if I had it to do all over again. "

Interviewed by Anthony Quan Hem 02/17/09

Where did you graduate from?
"I'm an HBCU graduate, from the University of DC. "

"That's a good way to be. Being friendly with people is something more people should learn. "

Interviewed by desmond kiser 01/22/09

how do u define success?
"Success is achieving your goals AND reaching out and helping other people achieve theirs. Many of us only do half of that. Once we get what we want, we think we’re done. But I do not believe that none of us are truly successful until we take time to mentor our youth or otherwise do something proactive to give back to the community. Only then shall we be fully successful. "

"Well, there are some scholarships that you may qualify for. The deadline is coming up soon for some of them so you gotta jump on it fast. Copy and past this link to see them. Just scroll down to fine the scholarship that you may be interested in. Good luck Calvin. http://hbcuconnect.com/cgi-bin/scholarships.cgi"

Interviewed by calvin ivy 01/15/09

what make you who you are
"I think there is no single thing to make me who I am. I am, just like everyone else, an ever evolving being, constantly changing with and adapting to the world around me. It are those experiences that I face and endure from day to day that shapes me into the person that I am, as well as the person that I am becoming. I am never complete, always striving, growing, changing, maturing, and as long as life places a path before me, that will forever be so. "

Interviewed by Tyrone Jones 01/14/09

What/Who inspires you to obtain greatness?
"I am most inspired by those people who try and get in the way of my progress. The more people tell me I cannot do something and the more they try to stop me, the more inspired I am to try harder and develop strategies to reach my goals."

Interviewed by Benjamin Stanton 01/12/09

What do you want to do when you grow up?
"advocate for the homeless"

Interviewed by chyanne mcdaniels 01/06/09

what are you searching for in life that would make you a reasonably content person
"Equality for all, regardless of gender, age, finances, or any other superficial thing that people use to judge others. "

Interviewed by anwar farqhuar 01/06/09

h0ws lif3 tr3atin ya?
"OMG, life is amazing...treatin me great, making me feel like I'm sitting on top of the world. "

Interviewed by D'Andria Smith 01/06/09

What exciting places have you visited?
"Two places that come to mind are the Dominican Republic and Italy. I enjoyed those places immensely and would love travelling there again. One thing that I noticed about those places is that they are no different from the United States. There is a very distinct underclass that is separated by race and economics – there is a distinct tourism focus, mostly staffed by those same underclass citizens who are paid pennies on the dollar and will likely never move out of work in the service industry because they are severely exploited by the system. It’s just an observation I made that you can travel all around the world and see many of the same injustices. It’s the same crap, just a different continent, and the people plagued by it are conditioned to believe they have no power to do anything about it. "

Interviewed by Christine Linen Moore 01/06/09

I don't have a question! LoL
"Yeah, that's how I felt when I first logged on. I was trying to figure out what question to ask. I eventually figured it out. "

Interviewed by Emery Rudolph 01/06/09

What inspires you to reach your goals?
"The thing that inspires me most to reach my goals is when I think of the people who made sacrifices to make life much easier for me. My parents and going back to the beginning of the civil rights era, lots of people paved the way to make it possible for me to achieve my goals and that’s what makes me get pumped and motivated. "

Interviewed by Jay Brown 01/05/09

What college do or did you attend
"I went to the University of DC. It was a good school and I am glad I went."

Interviewed by eddie williams 01/05/09

how was ur day?
"My day has been good. Started out rought, but got better as the day went along. And now, I'm walking on sunshine. I think I probably was walking on sunshine all along but I just didn't see it earlier. "

Interviewed by mark robinson 12/31/08

What is your biggest fear?
"My biggest fear now is that as I age, I will become a poor and destitute senior citizen. The financial crisis of today is going to be long lasting and though I think the economy will bounce back, I think it will affect everyone in years to come. I worry that I’ll be working still at the age of 70 or 80 years old. I fear that I’ll be working because I’ll need the income and not just because I’ll like working. That worries me immensely. "

Interviewed by Kala Bean 12/30/08

What makes you stand out from everyone else?
"It is my acepting nature that makes me stand out. I have always been the one person that everyone could count on not to judge them no matter how different they may be. I learned at a young age to look deeper at a person rather than focus on the superficial things about someone. "

Interviewed by Branden Bouvia 12/30/08

What did you enjoy about attending a Historically Black College and Univeristies?
"It was a great cultural awareness for me. In high school, the student body was a wide mix. It was primarily made up of white students though -I'd say about 70% white, and 30% everything else. Attending an HBCU was a great education in itself and one that I could not have gotten at a non HBCU. I believe that students do themselves a great disservice if they get their education at any other place than an HBCU. "

Interviewed by Ryan Burke 12/30/08

What do you want out of life?
"Peace, love, and companionship – not necessarily in that order. These three things, I believe, are the source of everyone’s happiness. "

Interviewed by Jehan Bunch 12/30/08

What are your weaknesses & strengths?
"bigggest weakness: I think I expect too much from people. I like tothink the best for people, even when they don't deserve it. biggest strength: I plan ahead for things, I always try to expect problems and make plans for them."

Interviewed by Roy Ector 12/24/08

Ask me anything...
"I love your concept about your manuscript, The Re-Education of the Female. They say communication is the key aspect of the relationship and what you propose sounds like a big step in opening up that much needed dialogue. "

Interviewed by Dante Moore 12/23/08

what is life
"Life is really only what you make it. There is no predetermined path to life. Life is all about your choices, all about your mindset, all about your world's view, all about your attitude. That is life."

Interviewed by stephion g 12/18/08

What is your dream in life?
"My dream in life is that we all can life lovingly together regardless how much money we have or no matter what we look like or no matter our race or religion or in spite of the things that make us different. My dream is that we all live together and accept each other and stop judging each other. "

Interviewed by Yancey James 12/16/08

What are your likes/dislikes in seeking a new friend?
"Likes: Genuine love and acceptance; seeking the innate knowledge of the other person; recognizing that we all have our flaws and not expecting people to be perfect. Dislikes: superficiality; always want something in return for kindness; "

Interviewed by Alfonso Davis 12/14/08

What are your favorite movies?
"My favorite movies change, depending on how I feel. But here are some I think are great films: To Kill A Mockingbird, Philadelphia, 12 Angry Men, Dirty Pretty Things."

Interviewed by Joseph Fenner 12/10/08

Do you see the glass as full or half empty?
"Oh, my glass has always been half full. Just between you and me, I see my glass as running over even when it’s really empty. I know that half the battle in making it through life is having the right perspective, and maintaining a positive outlook pivotal. When the day is gloomy and all you do is wallow in your misery, all that does is focus on what’s wrong rather than what’s right – and you can never rise above the state you’re in when you do that. Therefore, at a very early age, I learned the importance of looking for the rainbow in the middle of the storm. Some people call me corny because of this temperament; however, I don’t mind because this positive mantra that I hold onto is what keeps me smiling all the time, inside and out. "

Interviewed by Brynda Saunders-Winston 12/03/08

Tell me your dreams and goals
"I have lots of goals. But one that tops the list is a community program that helps middle of the road students.. you know, those students that are usually the average C student who aren't failing, but lack the academic skills to make better grades. There are plenty of programs for the talented and gifted students; there are plenty of programs for the students that are well below average, those who are failing. But for the students that are in the middle, just barely getting by, there are few programs that exist to help. I would love to start such a program for them. I was one of those students and know I could have done better in school with a little more resources to aid me."

Interviewed by Damyen Davis 11/30/08

What makes you happy?
"I realized this past week that the thing that makes me happy is being around good people with positive outlook and pleasant personalities. "

Interviewed by Ammons Smith 12/29/08

What are you about?
"Just about being me and associating with good people. "

Interviewed by Denzel Jean 11/13/08

my city of birth
"Atlanta, GA"

Interviewed by Bill Cooper 11/13/08

DO U THINK OBAMA WILL BE A GOOD PRESIDENT?
"Yes, I do. In listening to him speak and looking at the kind of Senator that he has been, he has great ideas and looks like someone who is interested in all people. I think he will do a great job. "

Interviewed by Cody McGrew 11/09/08

What makes the world a beautiful place...
"I think the world is beautiful when we share ourselves with each other, and see each other as our brothers and sisters in a loving and unconditional way. In a beautiful world, how can one man be happy when the man sitting next to him is wallowing in a sea of problems. We are definitely our brother's keepers and if we all would reach out to each other, even if all we do is lend an ear to listen, the world would be so much better."

Interviewed by John Waller 10/31/08

What is your main goal in life?
"My main goal in life is to always strive to make myself better. I’m always searching for ways to grow. One thing I do to make that happen is constantly look for ways to stretch myself by doing things outside of my zone of comfort, doing things that I am not used to doing. This has really made me a much better person. "

Interviewed by Russell Nelson 10/24/08

What would be your plan to help our incarcerated black teens?
"I think that not enough is done to teach them life skills. Teens who are incarcerated primarily learn their ABCs so they can graduate with their high school diploma. But to be successful in life, you need much more. Kids don’t learn much about respect for each other and they don’t learn about budgets and how to manage their money. Kids don’t have a clue about credit and the various types of things that can impact their credit score and their buying power. Life skills are severely lacking for these youth. So, I would want to see the jail education programs incorporate more life skills into its treatment regimen. Those who get out with this type of learning will stand a much better chance for success. As it is, jail is only what I like to call an in/out portal. Sadly, more than ¾ of the people who go to jail end up going in and out over and over and over again all throughout their lives. Maybe if they got the right type of treatment while inside, they might not keep going back. The penalty for committing crimes should be rehabilitative, punitive, retributive, and have a deterrent effect. It should do all of these things. If it only serves to warehouse someone, then it is failing that individual. There needs to be a more comprehensive approach. Opponents argue that it costs too much money; however, what costs more: 1) housing someone in jail or prison, over and over and over again providing room and board, or 2) meeting the person’s needs the first time incarcerated, thereby significantly reducing the likelihood that they will go back again? I say number two is the best option. "

Interviewed by david sorey 10/21/08

How do you measure success?
"I measure success as the achieving goals, however big or small. Each little tiny step toward the end is success, as it serves as a stepping stone to the next point on the path. Success doesn’t need to be anything large or grandiose. It just needs to be progress from one point to the next. "

Interviewed by Courtney Wylie 10/17/08

What makes a Friend
"I think a friend is a lot of things. First, a friend is someone who enjoys you for you. A friend doesn’t care how you look or doesn’t judge you because of your age or how much money you have. A friend embraces you unconditionally and when times are tough, friends help each other out without any thing expected in return and a friend will be there with you to laugh or cry. "

Interviewed by Alesseon Reed 10/14/08

What inspires you?
"Oh man there are so many things that inspire me. One thing that pops in my mind has to do with seeing other people overcome their adversity, especially when their plight is worse than my own. That inspires me a great deal. It helps me realize that I’m only holding myself back – allowing my own situation to keep me in shackles rather than push me to work harder. "

Interviewed by Xavier Thornton 09/26/08

Is truth absolute or subjective?
"Truth is definitely subjective. It’s all about the individual concerned and his or her vantage point. It’s a lot like the concept of looking at a glass that is only filled to the middle. Some will see it as half full while others see it as half empty. Also, think about taking a personality test that includes ink blots. Several different people can look at the same ink blots and each can see different images. With the glass and with the ink blots, everyone can look at them and see it differently. It’s still reality and truth for the person looking at it. Then there were eye witnesses to a crime that got someone a life prison sentence, only years later DNA exonerated him proving that he really did not do what the so-called witnesses claimed that he did. Presumably, the eye witnesses really may have thought what they saw was correct. To them, it was THEIR truth. Truth is really how things appear and exist to YOU. "

Interviewed by Michelle Diane 09/24/08

If walls could talk would they speak well of you?
"Interesting thing is, people speak much more highly than I might expect them too. So often, I am told that this person or that person has said great things about me and spoke highly of me. It isn’t that I expect the opposite, as I do go out of my way to be kind and reach out to uplift others. But sometimes I underestimate just how much of an impact a little kindness can be. I have even heard of people who have praised me that I don’t even know, or rather, that I cannot even remember. But it’s really like I believe – that you have to be a blessing to someone in order to get a blessing of your own. "

Interviewed by Antre Drummer 09/15/08

Who paid Jesse Jackson and Jeremiah Wright to try and sabotage Barak Obama?
"Honestly, I do not believe anybody paid those brothers to try and sabotage Senator Obama. As you probably know, there are people who have a hard time seeing other black people excel at anything. They will do things to sabotage any progress they see other people making toward their goals. Reverend Jackson and Reverend Wright are two such people. I think in the case of Reverend Jackson, it could also be jealously. Jackson has been in Obama’s shoes before trying to become President, but he didn’t do nearly as well and did not have nearly as many supporters. Both Jackson and Wright most likely were acting out of their own self-hatred in their attacks on Obama. "

Interviewed by Kevin Ware 09/12/08

What inspires you to write?
"The things that inspire vary. Mostly, I am inspired by events and people in my life – past and present. The events that I face every day are the inspiration that drive me and my thoughts and creativity. "

Interviewed by Grace LaJoy 09/12/08

How do you feel about the educational disparities in the US between African American communities and predominantly White communities?
"I think the inequities in education from one school district to another is simply horrible. But even more horrible than those inequities are the noncommittal attitudes of those in power in addressing the problem. These have existed since the landmark court case of Brown vs. Board of Education. The problem existed then and today, the problem still exists. The case, decided in 1954, held that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal" and nothing is more truer than that. Back then, before going before the Supreme Court, the law allowed for separate educational facilities for students. Today, circumstances and situations allow for separate educational facilities. Whatever the reason blacks and whites attend separate facilities, the end result is the same: the facilities are vastly unequal. And it’s not just a fight between blacks and whites. Some poor black neighborhoods are inferior to more affluent black neighborhoods. It troubles me, not just that the problem exists, but that the people we choose to elect to public office focus more on the economy and global warming and international terrorism than they focus on education. What good are all those other things if our kids are lacking in their basic educational needs? "

Interviewed by Kevin Gunnells 09/12/08

Why is that young african american men never support each other?
"You have hit on something that I think is so very important, and it doesn’t just stop with young men. I believe that men of all ages have a problem showing emotion with each other and expressing genuine love for each other. I think men think there is something wrong with it. It is something that has culturally been perpetuated since the beginning of time. Men can be gentle and caring with women but around other men, they have to be strong and hard. But you know, it is really okay to be helpful and show emotion to one other. It doesn’t show weakness. It really is a sign of a man’s inner strength and is reflective of his level of power and integrity. Maybe if more black men could learn this, then we would not be thought of as a hurtin/dying breed. "

Interviewed by Branden Williams 09/12/08

How do you define success?
"I think success is achieving your goals and modeling the behavior you expect from others. Anyone who can do that is successful in my view. "

Interviewed by Pamela Samuels Young 08/28/08

If you were banned from the United States and you have to leave today, what country would you go to live in - and why?
" If I were banned and had to leave today, I’d move to the Dominican Republic. I visited there twice and loved it immensely. I like the variety of the food, and the people are just some of the most beautiful (inside and out) people in the world. "

Interviewed by Dante Lee 08/28/08

What do you do for fun?
"I normally like to read, surf the net, and watch television. I also enjoy bowling, writing, and making friends and meeting new people. "

Interviewed by Elyse McFadden 08/26/08

Can you live a successful life with Bipolar Disorder?
"I do not know much about bipolar disorder; however, in terms of being successful in life, I don’t feel that I need to. In order to be successful in life, people need to find and employ all the necessary tools to aid them. We all need different tools, and if we are resourceful, even someone with bipolar disorder, we can find the tools to help us over come any barrier before us. So, yes, someone with bipolar disorder can indeed be productive and successful in life. "

Interviewed by agnes levine 08/24/08

What can you do to enhance your life and others?
"The best way that I – we – can enhance life is to at all times be real and genuine. It is never productive to change who we are to please and satisfy the expectations of others. Some people routinely make choices based on what others think or want or need and they deny themselves their own passions. If we live up to our own expectations, then we are being sincere in the truest sense of the word and there is no greater deed for making life better for ourselves and those around us. "

Interviewed by Jazzy Williams 08/21/08

Why do you wanna get to know me?
"The most successful people in life will tell you that one of strategies for making it in life is in networking. We should try to know a little bit about as many people as possible. You never know who we can help one day. We never know who may have resources that can help us one day. Nobody ever made it in life without help from others, and we all need to learn to reach out and share more of ourselves by getting to know others (and letting others get to know us) so that we can grow collectively as a community. "

Interviewed by shaniece swient 08/20/08

How much fun do you like to have?
"Fun is the cornerstone of life. I think one of the reasons why people have so many problems as they get older is because they don’t take time to have fun and enjoy life. We always hear people say someone is too old for this or they’re to old to be doing something. Well, I am just the opposite. I think the older we get, the MORE fun things we should be doing. I don’t think that means we should be irresponsible and avoid our obligations in life. No, but we need a good balance too. The old saying about too much work and no play, well that’s really true. Before my grandfather died, he was always talking about the things he wish he had done, most of them were fun and exciting things. So, I want to have all the fun I can. One thing we can never do is go back and get a do over. Let us all go out today and have as much fun as we can. "

Interviewed by Boshia Richardson 08/20/08

Do you think Barack Obama will be our next president?
"I think it will be a very close race. The one thing that will make or break it is in who he chooses to be Vice President. If he makes the right choice, he'll clich it. The wrong choice will make him lose for sure. I am banking on him picking someone to help boost him exponentially. "

Interviewed by Catherine Palmer 08/20/08

What is your life goal?
"My life goal is to create a non-profit academic program for average/marginal students. We have plenty of programs for the gifted and talented – we have a ton of programs for the remedial students – but the kids in the middle get left behind and sometimes fall right through the cracks. I know, because I was one of those students and I fortunately I was in the right place and had the right friends. But I saw lots of my peers lose interest in school and we all know what happens when many kids begin to fall behind in school. They fall behind in other areas of their lives too. So, I want to create a means to help these students so that they have a better chance in life. "

Interviewed by Bernie Brooks 08/20/08

Who is your role model and why?
"There is no one person who has served as my role model. My role model is a compilation of four people: my mom, my dad, and my paternal grandparents. Each one of these individuals instilled values in me that I still hold steadfast to this day. That taught me so many things ranging from things about life, spirituality, self-respect, respect for others, and so many other things and I embrace those lessons. As I look back over my life, each one of them is clearly a part of me. People who know them often see their character in me. "

Interviewed by Taquitta Watkins 07/18/08

If you had to do it all over again, would you choose an HBCU? (I would)
"Yes I would. But I would add another component to it. First, the cultural experiences at an HBCU is unlike any other. The experiences we share individually and collectively are unparalleled. The problem I see is that for many students, they have little experience interacting with people of other cultures and ethnic backgrounds. They grow up in their communities with people who are like them and then go to college from 4-6 years with more people just like them. The limited exposure most young people have with people from other backgrounds is not sufficient enough to teach them about individual differences and cannot give them a good lesson about cultural diversity. Then, when they enter the work place, things are often very different, and they have to instantly adapt to the melting pot of cultures and backgrounds. A lot of people adjust fairly well. But some do not. The lessons gleaned from the classroom or from the media could be skewed. My idea would allow for students to participate in an exchange program at a non-HBCU. Students at non-HBCUs should likewise participate in it as well. It could really be done as a sort of practicum requiring students to engage in writing or maybe even oral reports of what they learned. Would I attend an HBCU again if I could do it over? Absolutely, I would. I would just modify things to broaden my learning milieu. "

Interviewed by Lori Williams 07/18/08

What is the #1 thing you like about HBCUConnect.com?
"The #1 thing I like about HBCU Connect is actually the primary purpose for which the site was created: to keep students and alumni of HBCUs connected to one another and stay informed with HBCU business and employment opportunies or educational opportunities. The site helps keep people educated about HBCUs. Many of the schools are small. Some people may not have ever heard of some of the schools before- or it could be a school that some people may not have realized was an HBCU. The other day I was chatting with a graduate of Harris-Stowe State University. Never heard of it, and would never have guessed it was an HBCU. HBCU Connect helped me to get educated about that. I am just sad that more people are unaware of it. I try to let people know as I can, and hopefully others are doing the same. "

Interviewed by Will Moss 07/16/08

How do you get out of depression to feel appreciation?
" I get to a point in which I realize that other people can’t do it. All the comments and support I get from friends and family can only go so far. I have to get to a point where I know I can’t sink any deeper and have to pull myself up out of the trenches. As easy as it is to say, I keep telling myself that it isn’t over and I never lose hope. Even when I’m feeling my lowest and my most depressed state, I always have hope for a better and brighter day. It’s that hope is what helps me find the resources to rise above that depressed state. "
