The Raven’s Dream

For those who truly wish to get to know who and what I am, I’ll tell you. My name is Jeremiah Holt, Jr. and my friends usually call me, J.R. if not using it in some “unique” term of endearment. As for asking about what and who I am then let’s start kind of at the early years and how its led me to the current state I’m in now and how I intend for it to play out.

Ever since I was a small child, growing up for a period of time in either Washington, D.C. area, with my mother, or in Olympia, Washington, with my father I was always considered a dreamer. My parents are as diametrically opposite a pair as you would ever meet. My mother’s a college educated computer programmer and an ordained minister, while my father is your stereotypical high school educated, blue collared construction worker, and both are quite formidable in their respective fields.

From this unique pairing, I feel I have received the best of both worlds. I feel that this makes me a better than average competitor in my chosen field of bartending and bar management. From both of them I’ve been instilled with a dedicated work ethic, that when I am on site, I’m in for the long haul and will work until all needed objectives are done. From my father, I’ve learned how to respond quickly to unexpected surprises and to lend an ear to someone who has a problem. From my mother, I’ve learned to quickly and creatively solve problems and help assist those who also need assistance. In addition to this, from both of them I’ve learned to listen carefully to a problem objectively and be able to take accountability for all of my actions. I am truly thankful to them both for these and the many other lessons they have taught me.

My interest in the Hospitality Industry is something that has clicked inside of me for as long as I can remember. My first cooking lessons came from my father, Jeremiah Sr., who was a cook in the U.S. Army prior to meeting my mother, and my Maternal Grandmother, Nancy B. Lewis, at the age of four. By watching and helping out with the various parties and family reunions that I grew up around and observing relatives and friends laud over the dishes that were created; or how the house looked that evening. It was at a friend’s house I developed the love of mixology. I adore the shapes, colors, and scents of the various spirits, wines, and beers. From this small foundation came a dream that would turn into a lifelong quest. The first was to become a Licensed Bartender and Mixologist. The Second objective is to complete my educational requirements from The University of Phoenix - Oregon Campus. Then the real work begins…putting a lifetime of practical and academic lessons to fruition.

From what I have accomplished and will continue to accomplish, I hope to find a bartending position that develops into a Bar Manager Position within the next two years. After that become the General Manager a year later. After two years of running the tavern I work at, I want to own a restaurant and nightclub. Like the raven from Edgar Allen Poe’s Story, my retort to those who feel that I will never succeed or should settle for second best … “NEVER MORE!”
