BIOGRAPHY
Patrice Gilliam-Johnson, Ph.D.
Patrice Gilliam-Johnson, Ph.D. is an Industrial/Organizational Psychologist who currently serves as the President of the Gilliam Foundation, a philanthropic family managed organization which has provided over $2.8 million dollars to Delaware and other national and international non-profit organizations since 1998. The mission of the Gilliam Foundation is to improve the quality of life for individuals, families and communities through financial support of ongoing programs and innovative projects. Its charitable giving is designed to respect the diversity of communities, with particular attention given to the African American Community.
Additionally, Dr. Gilliam-Johnson serves as Regional Chairperson for the Organizational Dynamics and Psychology Programs at Wilmington University in New Castle, Delaware. She has taught for over 20 years at other institutions of higher learning prior to joining the faculty at Wilmington University as a full –time Associate Professor in 2002. Further, Dr. Gilliam-Johnson is the president and founder of Competency Unlimited, LLC. which is a 15 year old consulting firm specializing in cultural competency, leadership, executive and team development, professional career development, organizational assessments and empowerment development issues. She has facilitated leadership and organizational development for clients in a broad spectrum of organizations to include education, finance, transportation, healthcare, social services and other private, government and non-profit agencies.
Most recently, Dr. Gilliam-Johnson received certification from the National Multi-Cultural Institute in Building Cultural Capabilities for an Inclusive Workplace and has used this training to assist her in efforts to consult with organizations in their strategic efforts to become more culturally aware and competent. In 2011 she was highlighted by Delaware Today as one of Delaware’s most inspirational leaders..
During her career, Dr. Gilliam-Johnson has published articles on women’s leadership and organizational diversity. For a number of years, she has served as a “workplace expert” for Essence Magazine and has presented at conferences throughout the country on topics related to organizational training and professional/career development issues. She holds a doctorate and master’s degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Maryland, at College Park.
Dr. Gilliam-Johnson’s approach to consulting and coaching grows out of her diverse life experience as a women and person of color. Her more recent interests focus on bridging the divide between body, mind and spirit to enable workers to thrive in today’s workplace.

Claim To Fame:
Currently, Dr. Gilliam-Johnson serves as a Co-Chair for the Center of African American Heritage Center Advisory Council (DE), was appointed as the Board Chair for the new Life Health Center (DE) and, along with a colleague, is a Founder of the Circle of Elders Lecture Series which is a collaborative initiative designed to build upon the historical knowledge of elders to empower the next generation of leaders. In 2011 Dr. Gilliam-Johnson was highlighted by Delaware Today Magazine as one of Delaware’s most inspirational leaders.
Most Memorable Moment:
My most memorable college moments center around walking across the yard and seeing so many friends and acquaintances, pledging Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and connecting with so many awesome professors who served as role-models and mentors!
