Corey L. Burns was commissioned at Cameron University with a Bachelor in Engineering and Design in May of 2003. He graduated from Engineer Officers Basic Course and was assigned to 92nd Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy) at Fort Stewart, Georgia where he served as the Maintenance Officer for HSC, 92nd ECB (H). He was given a vertical platoon with A CO, 92nd ECB (H) just before the Battalion deployed during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) 04-06. As a vertical platoon leader, his platoon created several Sea-huts for incoming Brigades, restored several condemned buildings and was chosen to brief the Commanding General of the Army Corp of Engineers on new constructed civil affairs building. Later on during the deployment, he became a horizontal platoon leader for B CO, 92nd ECB (H). His platoon constructed drainage systems for two FOBs throughout Baghdad and created a canal at Camp Liberty that prevents the flooding of four pads. After the Battalion redeployed to Fort Stewart in January 2006, 1LT Burns assumed the responsibilities of Assistant S3 and setup the training ranges in preparation of the Battalion deploying back late November. He moved to Fort Leonard wood in June 2006, Missouri to attend the Engineers Captain’s Career Course. Captain Burns graduated the career course and began his Master in Geological Engineering in December 2006, he was reassigned to Fort Riley, Kansas where is currently the Commander of C CO, 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. As the Commander of Route Clearance, his company was able to facilitate “Freedom of Movement” within the Baghdad area through the identification of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Following command while deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom 08-09, Captain Burns continued the deployment with 1-18 Infantry Battalion as the Combat Operations Engineer Officer (COEO). As the COEO, I coordinated for route clearance support as well as explosive hazard teams in support of cordon and search operations. Once redeploying, Captain Burns moved to Fort Sill Oklahoma in January 2010 where he was assigned to 1-30 Artillery Battalion where he served as a Basic Officer Leadership Course (BOLC) Engineer Instructor under the Combined Arms Division (CAD). In October 2012, Captain Burns was assigned to the Corps of Engineers, Tulsa District where he served as the Project Engineer stationed at Fort Sill. As the Project Engineer, CPT Burns enhanced the Quality of Life on Fort Sill, Sheppard AFB and Altus AFB through military construction and contract management. While at Fort Sill, Captain Burns received his Masters in Geological Engineering from Missouri Science and Technology and was promoted from Captain to Major in April of 2013. Currently, Major Burns is stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas where he’s a student at Command General Staff Officer College (CGSOC) and is studying to be a licensed Project Management Professional (PMP).
