About   (request update)
As a child my mother, who was battling her drug addiction, could not provide a stable environment for three kids. After years of struggling, she finally made the decision to leave us with family in Chicago and she left for Minnesota. I was the youngest and so, at the time, I did not understand what had happened. I would sit at the door waiting for hours on her to return. Those hours became days, and then the days became years. I felt as if it wasn’t fair, for this to happen to me. I didn’t ask to be born. My mother and her irresponsible decisions and my negligent father who was unwilling to take care of his children, affected my life deeply and I couldn’t do anything about it.
For many years, I was mad at the world for not allowing me to live with my mother. Although my mother and I talked on the phone, and she would visit us in Chicago, it wasn’t the same as living with her. My hurt and anger became external, I began getting into trouble at school, hanging around with the wrong crowds, and being disruptive in class. Everything was starting to affect me. Some days I would lie in bed and think about my life. It had been thirteen years and the cause of my mother’s past was still haunting me. Feeling overwhelmed, I began to write. I wrote all night. This became a regular routine; it grew from a hobby to something I was very passionate about. I expanded and began writing poetry, short stories and plays. Writing allowed me to escape and forget about my personal problems. My school work and attitude improved greatly, I began surrounding myself with people who were positive influences. I learned that an unfortunate beginning need not continue into an unfortunate present and future.
