About   (request update)
I was born on September 16, 1991, but it was till I was 12yrs old; I took my first breath. When I was 12; I met the teacher of my life. She was a great teacher and had a wonderful aura about her. She had a passion for poetry. Her voice was that of an angel when she read her poetry. I detested poetry. In fact, I felt it was gay for man to express his feelings through writing.
Every day I would just sit in her 5th period English class bored, till one day she assigned us a homework assignment. The homework assignment was to write a poem relating to African American Heritage Month. I really didn’t care for poetry so I did not do the assignment. The next day during 4th period lunch my friend asked me did I do Ms. Hunter’s homework and I remember that I did not do it. I took out my paper and pen and wrote, “I am an African American.” I knew that would be the perfect title for my poem. I started to write whatever came to my head and there I was done. I finished my homework write when the bell rang for 5th period.
Then I entered her room, handing in my last minute work. She took all of our assignments and started to grade the poems. She gave us some class work to do while we were waiting, but I was nervous because I did not want her to realize that this was last minute work. So as I sat there in fear, I was surprised to here her call my name. I went over to her desk cautiously as I tried t keep my composure. She told me that my poem was really good. She felt it was so good that she wanted to submit it into a poetry contest at Countee Cullen Library. I gave her permission to enter it into the contest thinking I was not going to win anyway. I was wrong. Dead wrong.
Later that week I was home on my computer when my mom came in through the door and said wow! You have mail Angelo. I was shocked because I never received mail. I anxiously opened the mail and thought to myself…could it be for the poetry contest. So I read and there it was; it stated that I won 3rd place at the Countee Cullen Library and that I had to recite my poem in the library downstairs in their auditorium. I had stage fright. Although I was a very social person I always got scared in the mist of crowds. So there, standing in the midst of the crowd. I took a deep breath. In fact it was my first true breath. It was a breath so deep that it would not let me exhale until I was finished with my poem. I won't tell you the out come of that first breath but i will tell you this: Ever since that first breath I continued to write poetry and dedicate my life to Christ
