Born in Martinsville, Virginia – the home of textiles, NASCAR and furniture, April was born into poverty, and lived her childhood years with her mother, brother and sister on and off of her Grandmother’s small farm. Working three jobs to support her children and earning less than $6,000 per year, April’s Mom was able to provide barely more than love and inspiration. With few financial resources but limitless devotion, she instilled her children with responsibility, discipline, determination, self-worth and the ability to dream. Her Mom also showed them that inevitably, rough times will come, and only your family and true friends will be there to help you work through them.
Despite the considerable challenges her family faced, April thrived by focusing on her dreams. As a high school student, April took her mother’s lessons to heart, earning top academic and leadership honors. She was the creator and host of her own local television show Teen Upbeat, and the president of the high school’s Students against Drunk Driving chapter. She graduated with honors and numerous awards for scholarship, leadership and community service, including the locally prestigious L. A. Vickers Award.
Academic and political success followed her to Virginia Union University where she studied Psychology, and was elected the Student Body President as a junior. While at VUU, April joined the Original Southern Writers Literary Guild, which later morphed into the Jazz Poets Society. April later formed Carmel Elixir, which, during a performance in a major venue in Richmond, she met her husband, Reginald “Big Reggie” Jones, an international professional basketball player.
After Big Reggie’s retirement from professional basketball, they moved to Northern Virginia where they currently reside with their two sons. April is currently concentrating her attention on the development of an inspirational book and television project focusing on women overcoming personal, cultural and societal challenges so they can achieve their personal goals and feel wonderful about themselves, despite the current affairs of their lives.
April’s inspirational book “The Country Girl's Guide to Beauty from the Inside Out" teaches a woman basic tips to improve her image and live a happier fuller life. Unlike most other self-help authors, April focuses on both inner and outer beauty, providing inspirational stories from real women that motivate with practical advice the reader can understand and implement
