Lawrence Wayne is a writer, producer, educator, director and syndicated columnist (VIP MEMPHIS Magazine).
He founded the Memphis Black Writers Conference in 1996. The mission of this organization is to support writers, poets, artists and others who portray positive aspects and cultural achievements of African American people across the globe.
Mr. Wayne is currently working on an independent documentary film called ”Happy Lawrence Wayne Day- July 25: What Would a Brother do with his own Day?” The film was shot in various locations including Harlem New York, Downtown Manhattan, and Memphis, TN. This film will cover the original event marking Lawrence Wayne Day on July 25, 2004 and the subsequent impact and significance of the day. The film will be shown at Black Film festivals across the country as well as to an international audience.
He has also outlined a script based on the life story of the legendary coach of the Melrose Golden Wildcats, Coach Tim Thompson. Lawrence has been selected to participate in the opening ceremony of the Soweto Writers & Film Festival in South Africa by Festival Director Basil Dube. The Memphis Black Writers Conference & Southern Film Festival and the Soweto Writers & Film Festival are in the process of forming a cultural exchange program between the two historic cities.
Mr. Wayne has drafted an original play entitled: “The Ernest C. Withers Story: Civil Rights Photographer” based on the life of award-winning photographer Ernest C. Withers. Lawrence has several theatrical, film, and TV ideas in development.
Mr. Wayne received the “Black Living Legendary Icon of Excellence & Literary Hero” award for his work with literacy and children. He was honored at a ceremony during the Harlem Book Fair in New York July 25, 2004 by the Younity Reviewers Guild. Lawrence was one of the featured guest authors on the main stage at the Harlem Book Fair near the world-renowned Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. In addition, ‘Lawrence Wayne Day’ was officially declared by internationally known president and founder of Disilgold, Inc., Heather Covington. The day will be observed each July 25 and celebrated by hugging children 18 years and under and saying, “I love you!” It is also a day to recognize those who do a good job by contacting their employer and touting their work ethic. Everyone is also encouraged to give these hard working citizens an extra ‘special’ token of appreciation.
He is author of the book, “How to Encourage Young African American Children to Read…A Black Reader’s Guide.” Lawrence is a literary and cultural consultant and has conducted “Editing, Writing and Publishing” workshops on various campuses including Lemoyne-Owen College (Summer 2004). Mr. Wayne also conducted a week- long writer’s workshop with 20 students from the Gear-Up Program from West Memphis, Arkansas. He is the architect and designer of the C.A.R. (Comprehension and Analytical Reading) program. The program was designed to help children, students or adult employees increase reading comprehension, write better papers and reports, and retain information to pass exams.
He is the Southern Division Director of the Younity Reviewers Guild, Advisory Board Member of MID-SOUTH READS (formerly It’s Time to Read) Coalition (an advocacy support organization for literacy in Memphis and the surrounding communities). Mr. Wayne is the Co-Director of the Memphis BWC VIP Speaker’s Bureau. The bureau provides experienced and expert speakers in the areas of: Reading, Creative Writing, Character Education, Community Improvement and Involvement, Workplace Readiness, Creative Expressions (Drama, Poetry, Music, etc.) and Adult Enrichment Programs. He also serves on the Executive Board of Directors of the African Diaspora Film Festival. He works on various volunteer programs around the city including WKNO and other organizations that promote reading.
Lawrence has attended more than 30 national and international film festivals and writers conferences. It was at a New York playwright/screenwriter’s conference that he won 1st runner-up for his original play, “Albertine Meets the King.” He has earned over 145 credit hours in various workshops including Advanced Screenwriting, Film Marketing, Director’s Workshop, Editing Workshops, Actor’s Boot Camp, Book to Film Adaptations, Scoring Music for Films, and other related topics.
Mr. Wayne has met and interviewed hundreds of super stars including Angela Bassett, Denzel Washington, Whitney Houston, Mekhi Phifer, Nia Long, Larenz Tate, Melvin Van Peebles, Ilyana Vanzant, Lisa Raye, Billy D. Williams, John Singleton, Halle Berry, and Vivica A. Fox just to name a few.
His vision is to make the Memphis Black Writers Conference & Southern Film Festival the center of the New Memphis Black Renaissance in the same vein as the Harlem Renaissance.
