Posted By: Candace Wilson on June 24, 2005

Ok, me and my boyfriend are going to different HBCU's, he's going to Allen and I'm going to Savannah State. We are undecided on what we are going to do in August when we go to our schools. Do you think that we should slow down, or break up or just see what happens, or what, my mind is SHOT, i dont honestly know what to do, please help me. I want both male and female points of view...Thanx

If you're down for a long-distance relationship...try it. However, before you do, answer these questions honestly.

Can you trust your boyfriend?
Does he trust you?
Can you/he handle not seeing him for long periods of time?
Will you/he fall victim to temptation and cheat on him/you?
Do you REALLY, HONESTLY think you can handle it?

If you can assure yourself of these questions...then ask him how he feels about it, and try that...

To be honest with you, long distance relationships are not easy. However, I believe that you need to truly ask yourself whether or not the relationship is worth the stress of late night phone calls when you should be studying for an exam or writting a paper, sad thoughts when you hear "yall's song" on the radio and this of that sort. Also, consider the fact that you will have a lot of adjustments to make as far as your life is concerned during your first year in college. Make sure the stress of not being able to see your boyfriend won't add to all you have to accomplish and achieve. I broke up with my boyfriend of 18 months (it was really about two years) just before leaving California and moving to Atlanta. I was convinced that our relationsjip would only be a distraction and hold me back from "my freedom". While at school I met someone else (which is a whole different stroy in itself) and my the feelings I once had for him faded. Not to say that this will happen to you but just food for thought. I believe that you should go with what ever situation your heart leads you to follow because after all you are the only one who must wake up and deal with the decision that you make.

I think if the both of you or one of you knows you might not be able to handle the situation your putting yourselves in than you should just be friends. I began college in the fall of 2004 but i will be a junior in the spring. My x-boyfriend lived in Miami and I moved to go to school in Columbia, Benedict College. And he was my fiance, but we though we could do the long distant relationship thingy... I went to visit my god-parents in germany ove rmy month christmas break and when i came back it was like my fiance gave up b/c me and him hadn't talk in a while. After that things just got worst. But honestly I really cannot sit here and tell you do this or that b/c I am not in your relationship so I can't say stay together or break up. I don't know what the two of you have gone through in your relationship to stay together... After all, if you do break up if godd made the two of you to be together and spend the rest of your lives together he WILL make things work out for you guys. My best advice is to pray and ask god what you should do, he will answer you through your conscience, then procede to make your decision. Good luck girl!!
