Miss Morris Brown College 2008-2009
Posted By: Anya Dixon on November 06, 2008 I am Anya Aprille Dixon, a senior Music Industry major at Morris Brown College.I was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina and I am the proud daughter of Arnett and Patricia Dixon. Desires post graduation: I plan to continue my career as a Minister of Music, recording artist, singer, songwriter, producer, and engineer under my company All “A” Music Productions, LLC. I also plan to open a Cultural Arts Center that will provide young people with education and recreation centered around the arts, but in a Christian environment seven days a week. Extracurricular Activities: I am a member and student conductor of the Singers of Morris Brown, a band manager for the MBC Marching Wolverine Band, a member of the MBC Jazz Ensemble, Tutor/Counselor with Upward Bound, Music Director for the MBC Theatre Arts Program, and a worship leader for the MBC Hour of Power. Hobbies/Other Interests: I enjoy watching movies, shopping, and anything that deals with music. Any previous Honors or Awards: I have received several honors and awards in the area of music. I have also had the honor of being on the President’s and Dean’s List. Why Morris Brown College: I believe that in order to rebuild this institution, we must start with the foundation that has been laid by our ancestors. We, as students, serve as the bricks that are used to give growth and height to the structure. As we grow in numbers and strength, Morris Brown College will be able to rise to levels beyond what man’s eyes can see. God has birthed us and no man shall destroy us. I feel that I have been anointed and appointed by God to represent Morris Brown College on a local, national, and if given the opportunity, a worldwide level, while standing firm on our institution’s core values of interest, integrity, and respect. I have been given a vision for us to begin rising above the standards. It is time that we, not only as an HBCU, but as African-Americans, go beyond the standards that the world, including ourselves, have set. Black colleges are considered by some to be “ghetto institutions.” People expect to come to campus and see students hanging around campus smoking and drinking, young ladies wearing clothing that leaves little or nothing to the imagination, young men sagging their pants but holding on to them to keep from losing them, and of course a party every other night. Now don’t get me wrong, it is fine to want to look nice, be comfortable, and have fun, but this is a Christian Liberal Arts College that prepares its students to be professional and intelligent adults. We do not have to settle for mediocrity. If it has been established that the minimum GPA requirement to participate in extracurricular activities is a 2.5, why not go for a 3.0 and if it is a requirement to have a 3.0 in order to apply for scholarships, why not strive to make a 3.5 or higher. People outside of this institute may not want to see us succeed, but Morris Brown College, founded on service, grounded in excellence, and anchored in tradition, prepares and promotes students destined for a lifetime of learning and achievement in a global society. By having an interest in excellence and success, having integrity and good character, and respecting God, ourselves, and others, we shall rise above the standards.
