Posted By: Jehan Bunch on November 14, 2008 Job Description: Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities Eastern Illinois University invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities. The College seeks a dynamic person to provide effective leadership and vision that advances the college and university missions and goals in an academic environment of excellence. The College of Arts and Humanities is comprised of 225 faculty members in nine academic departments representing the Arts (Art, Music, Theatre Arts) and the Humanities (English, Communication Studies, Foreign Languages, History, Journalism, Philosophy) as well as the Interdisciplinary Center for Global Diversity (African-American Studies, Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, Women’s Studies) and the Tarble Arts Center, a major cultural arts resource serving east-central Illinois. The College enrolls about 1800 majors and awarded 460 degrees in AY 2008. The College of Arts and Humanities Dean’s suite is housed in the newly renovated and expanded Doudna Fine Arts Center, Eastern Illinois University's newest architectural landmark, designed by the internationally renowned architect Antoine Predock, winner of the 2006 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement and the 2007 Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum's Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Design. Responsibilities: The Dean’s responsibilities include: Articulating a clear vision for the College and providing compelling leadership to realize the vision Providing leadership to assist the College’s units in realizing “integrative learning” opportunities in all degree programs through which students are intentionally encouraged to reflect on the connections between their academic programs and their personal experiences and development Encouraging creativity, innovation, scholarship, and interaction among faculty Promoting a climate in which excellence and creativity are fostered among both students and faculty Managing the quality and future directions of the undergraduate and graduate curricula Providing skilled administration to facilitate decision making at all levels of the College Executing responsible budget planning and fiscal management Forging strong partnerships and collaborative relationships with local and regional off-campus constituencies in both the arts and the humanities Participating actively in public, private and corporate development activities and extramural fundraising efforts for the College Promoting a positive work environment for staff, faculty, and students Fostering diversity among faculty, staff, and students Qualifications: Qualified applicants must hold a terminal degree appropriate to one of the disciplines in the College with teaching, research/scholarly/creative achievement, and service commensurate with a tenured faculty appointment in one of the academic units within the College and demonstrate: Significant administrative and budgetary experience in a higher education setting at the level of department chair, director or other senior level administrative position Proven leadership ability including the ability to deal effectively with a diverse and broad range of constituencies and the skills necessary to lead a dynamic academic college The ability to foster and promote the programs and activities of the College to on- and off-campus constituencies Commitment to innovative undergraduate and graduate education Outstanding oral and written communication skills Commitment to enhancing diversity and equal opportunity for members of minority groups and women Starting Date: July 1, 2009 Salary Range: Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications. Official transcripts of all college and university coursework will be required of individuals chosen for campus interviews. Instructions for submitting transcripts will be provided to those candidates at that time.
