Posted By: Marta Fernandez on December 28, 2008 Our new Administration faces the task of cleaning up the mess left by a heartless prior adminstration--with no opportunities except for the well connected, private school graduates and attendees- without sufficient guidance, our youth collectively, of every nationality in America has turned to crime. COPS Community Policing which worked very well in Las Vegas, where I lived had their funds reduced under Bush. The result was devastating. Obama plans to increase a key funding source, it is the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (Byrne/JAG) program, which funds anti-drug and anti-gang task forces across the country. This fund also gives to drug treatment programs for prevention (I hope it's not D.A.R.E. my kids already told me more DARE graduates are on drugs than I care to know, because they said they learn all about drugs and which one to avoid). Since 2000 the program was cut by 83%, threatening the many good drug programs --that took years to create and develop. This is a huge endemic problem --he will need all of us..to get involved,the Ministers the Community organizers, the non-profits, the colleges, the prison reform groups,and the synagogues, temples and mosques.Everybody needs to help somebody on this one. * He want us to take back our neighborhoods from violence. * End the dangerous cycle of youth violence--(and I hope along with Kenny Gamble former owner/producer of TSOP (the Sound of Philadelphia) who has used his millions to create outlets for the disenfranchised will be a part of this.) * Keep Drug's Off America's Streets *Stop Repeat Offenders * Recruit more neighborhood Prosecutors--This is similar to community policing, with the Criminal Justice System of the Municpalities working with the residents) * Guarantee the Rights of Victims *Register and Restrict Sex Offenders * Protect Our Children Online Authors' Note: Community Policing does alleviate and lessen the impact of crime in our neighborhoods, and gang experts do realize that gang memberships are the result of poor family relations, lack of community support and while gang members do have self-esteem they lack self-worth.
