Aretha Franklin Is Beloved By Me

Posted By: on January 14, 2009

I was up on Youtube.com the other day playing some of Aretha Franklin's old songs, when I noticed that these songs correlated with my life narrative experiences such as graduation, marriage, enlistment etc. and I recalled just what I was doing, and where I was when it became a hit. Suddenly it occurred to me what a huge part of my life Aretha Franklin’s music has shared, spanning some fifty years. “Respect”, “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, “The Shoop Shoop Song”-to names a few early ones -go back to my childhood first dates. I had never really thought about Aretha’s importance to American culture before and it came as quite a shock to discover that I literally grew up around her career.

Few singers last as long as she has. Aretha is a super star of the magnitude of greatness. Her light has shined on a middle-aged soulster like myself for many years. I realize now the blessing, that love and respect for the Queen of Soul is in order; manifested it has humbled me to recall so many vivid memories while listening to her music. What a wonderful feeling this giant of soul has brought into our lives. Her blues has made this life less the chore and more one filled with feeling. Thanks to Aretha Franklin being with us all these years producing hit after hit, I can reflect clearly on my past from Sam Cooke to Dr. King. I guess that is why she is called the “Queen of Soul”.
