Maintaining the Dream/Fighting On

Posted By: cece valentine on January 20, 2009

Barack Husein Obama was inaugurated the 44th president today. I watched with middle schoolers today as I subbed for a teacher who went to the festivities in DC. As I left for home, the young lady who was the teacher in one class said, we have to get in all requests right away, we don't know how long this will last. I agreed. Nothing lasts forever. We have won, the fight goes on.

I volunteered with Democratic Committee in Clayton County, GA, making phone calls, entering data on computers, canvassing for a couple of days until my arthritis said no. That reminded me of days at Hampton U when we would go off campus and march to protest segregated movie theatres and the lunch counter at the downtown Wornom's Drug Store, without the sanction of the college. It took hard, consistent work to change the oppression of those days gone by and it took hard, consistent, persistent work to get Barack Obama elected.

It will take hard, consistent, persistent work to change the mindset of bigots and racists who will kill their own to keep people of color in a second class position in this world. Just because Obama is president does not mean they have retreated. They are getting their second wind for another battle.

Enjoy the festivities! Barack and Michelle are currently attending 10 balls as I write this. I want them to party hardy tonight so they will never forget his night. Anyone else who went out and celebrated tonight deserved to celebrate. It has been a hard, long road to this day. I was afraid to go to the March on Washington. I was too afraid to go Down South to protest. I fought my battles on my home turf, resulting in blackballing. I have cousins who graduated from the state university that turned me down when I sent in my required photo. It has been a day long coming, but I feel vindicated. I did not walk blisters on my feet for nothing. God is faithful after all. I won't give up the fight.
