SUNO qualifies more for NAIA national meet

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Southern University at New Orleans’ (SUNO) men’s track and field qualified to compete in a third event at the NAIA 2009 National Indoor Championship after the 4 x 400 meter relay team ran well at the LSU Purple Tiger Classic on Friday. The team, consisting of Mekel Downer, Chadrick Nelson, Adrian Simpson and Norbert Miller, placed third at LSU with a time of 3:21.84. The team is currently ranked 8th in the nation.



SUNO will also be sending runners to the national meet in the 200 meter and 400 meter dashes. Downer qualified for the 200 at the Leonard Hilton Memorial at the University of Houston on January 16th with a time of 22.43. Miller and Simpson both qualified for the 400 at the same meet with times of 49.89 and 49.90, respectively.

SUNO’s team placed 11th out of 44 teams from the United States and Canada at the NAIA’s 2008 national competition, having earned six All-American honors in the 4 x 400 and the 400.
