Say Good-Bye to Morris Brown!!

Posted By: cece valentine on February 08, 2009

A couple of months ago, I called administration at Morris Brown College in Atlanta, because I was concerned about the possibility of their closing forever. Although it was during the Christmas holiday, I felt that it was more important for SOMEONE to be available to take calls in case someone would come out of the blue and pay the $300 k due in water bills, pay the note on one of the historic halls that is in foreclosure, and be able to pay other bills that will cause the college to be closed by February 15, 2009. No more extensions. No one was available to take my call.

I called after the holiday while at home and the grands were in school. I got in touch with a couple of people, the president's assistant whom I asked to have Mr. President call me. I received no answer. I had read a comment from him that he had called (?) Oprah Winfrey and someone else equally solvent in hopes of receiving a large donation that would wipe out the obligations. That was the extent, apparently of his fund-raising efforts.

Perhaps a little history is in order. I will be brief. About six years ago, the then-president and an assistant were caught embezzling funds and charging the federal government for students loans drawn on the names of individuals who were not even students there. A horribly large sum of money in which they agreed to pay a small portion of disappeared unaccounted for. I understand the individuals have not repaid the amounts and did not receive jail terms. Monies received since then have only been covering over a festering problem.

Where is the accountabilty? How can the school ask for donations if one does not know who and why the money is being taken? After the 31st of December, a few tables were set out on the campus and over $50 thousand dollars were raised in 2 hours. If that were possible, why wasn't a large mailing sent out before the end of the tax quarter and money collected to help the college? Who is in charge of fund-raising? Would you send money to the college if you did not see an independent firm or bank handling such funds? I wouldn't and , obviously, many aren't.

I am an educational management and support consultant. I help small schools to get on track, get accreditation and with marketing, become financially secure. I offered to help Morris Brown in fund raising, free, although I do not know if Georgia has rules for fund raisers. Virginia does and I am newly moved from Virginia. No response. Nothing in the newspaper. Zilch.

Oprah, meanwhile, donated about $300 k to the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, a school where she could see the use of her money.

I am so sad about Morris Brown. They were a feisty bunch like Hampton University, my alma mater, used to be. Any kid could come there and say," I want to be in college", would be accepted and put on academic pro for a year and given that opportunity to prove himself. Anyone who saw "Drumline" saw the marching band. All that will be gone forever. And (I know I'm beginning my sentence incorrectly, but I am making a point!), any time the A.M.E. Church is not throwing good money into the school anymore is telling me something. This is a church -run school and it is abandoned. Students there need to be ready to jump ship soon.

Rest in Peace, Morris Brown EDU, the founders did a good job. Perhaps it is time to move on to other things.
