THE NAACP IS 100 YEARS OLD

THE NAACP IS 100 YEARS OLD
Posted By: MIISRAEL Bride on February 12, 2009

When you noticed it's February 12, your first thought might be that's Abraham Lincoln's birthday and so it is his birthday today. However, you may not knew (at least I didn't ) that the NAACP is 100 years old today. Many around the country will be celebrating this organization. Just in case some of you don't remember the function of this group, I have posted a few things of interest. If you have a contribution or facts, please I encourage it. The formation of this organization was to advance people of color.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, usually abbreviated as NAACP, is one of the oldest and most influential civil rights organizations in the United States. Its mission is "to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination".

1909-2009--

In 1905, a group of 32 prominent, outspoken African Americans met to discuss the challenges facing "people of color" (a term that was used to describe those who were not white people) in the U.S. and possible strategies and solutions. Among the issues they were concerned about was the disfranchisement of blacks in the South starting in 1890 to 1908, when Southern legislatures ratified new constitutions creating barriers to voter registration and more complex election rules. Voter registration and turnout dropped markedly in the South as a result.

Men who had been voting for 30 years were told they did not "qualify" to register.

Because hotels in the U.S. were segregated, the men convened under the leadership of Harvard scholar W. E. B. Du Bois at a hotel situated on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. As a result, the group came to be known as the Niagara Movement. A year later, three whites joined the group: journalist William E. Walling, social worker Mary White Ovington, and Jewish social worker Henry Moskowitz, then Associate Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture.

The fledgling group struggled for a time with limited resources and decided to broaden its membership to increase its scope and effectiveness. Solicitations for support went out to more than 60 prominent Americans, and a meeting date was set for February 12, 1909. This was intended to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the birth of President Abraham Lincoln, who emancipated enslaved African Americans. While the meeting did not take place until three months later, this date is often cited as the founding date of the organization.

Since this is both a day in which two greats Abe Lincoln 200th Birthday, and NAACP 100 Years both has impacted history of people of color and all Americans. It is a celebration worth a notice. Check your local chapter of The NAACP and find out more or your public library.

I am well aware of the NAACP's grand history, but it appears that the organization has lost its focus. I am highly disappointed in its inability to relate to the day-to-day dscrimination of African-Amercan youth and the necessity for these youth to have such an advocate as the NAACP once was.

I regret the WE have sort to leave out SOME of the truth about where the NAACP original monies came from, but I as a proud Black female who has supported the NAACP longer than most of you have been alive, refuses to support them any more...cece here is one of the reasons coming from actually one who marched in the 60s in support of what has been lost by the NAACP.

One of my reasons is today's NAACP is no longer what the mission statement of the NAACP is all about therefore it is divided today not on protecting Civil Rights but protecting political biases...This is why me and countless of those who still work with the spirit and according to the guidelines of the original NAACP will not send them any money after a life time of doing so...

Along with the Obama Nation will come TRUTHS as I just spoke, ready or not the future is here in African-American history

Thanks and my respects to both you MISRAEL for this information as it is so needed by us all. Communication amonge us about us will never be defeated so keep this information coming my sister(smile)

Probable not as information about the major, major role that the Jews played in the NAACP's founding is still left out of the picture along with so much other things get left out as related to truth /facts...

Thank you E for this as I did not know this before now.Now I will go research his contrabutions to this organization. I know he did believe that he had a major role in protecting mankind from themselves as we all should be trying to do by way of FACTS. thanks
