5 Strategies to Recession Proof Your Career

5 Strategies to Recession Proof Your Career
Posted By: Kesi Stribling on February 13, 2009

In January alone, almost 600,000 American jobs were cut. Let’s face it. In this economy, job seekers have to stay ahead of the game to survive.

As we look at daily reports about jobs lost, escalating unemployment rates, and the tug-of-war as President Obama attempts to get lawmakers to pass the proposed economic stimulus package (note: it passed about 20 minutes ago), it can be a little overwhelming to think about what's going on in our own little world.

Most of us may still be working, but it is never too soon to prepare yourself for the next career move, especially in a shaky economy.

But, where to begin? What should you do?

There are some essential steps you can take to take the helm of your career. There are five distinct strategies to help you become employed and stay employed. One of the key strategies is to become the master or mistress of networking. The new definition of networking goes beyond the standard business card exchange.

A strategic approach involves investigating who will be at the networking event before it is held, doing research about the host organization, and most important, perfecting your 5 second sound byte.

Another key strategy is to continually update and strengthen your knowledge, skills, and abilities, also known simply as KSAs. Whether you work in the federal government or private sector, chronicling your KSAs can also help you find out what you're good at in the workplace.
