Hampton Women, Norfolk State Men Win 2009 Indoor Titles

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on February 16, 2009 FEATURED Content The Hampton Lady Pirates and Norfolk State Spartans won the 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Track and Field titles Saturday afternoon at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex. Hampton recorded 148 points en route to their seventh consecutive MEAC title and eighth overall. The Spartans of Norfolk State captured their fourth consecutive title with 150 total points. Hampton’s Maurice Pierce was named the Women’s Outstanding Coach for the seventh straight year. “We did a good job of making sure we had people in the right place in case we made mistakes, explained Pierce.” “We’ve had great sprinters who gave us big points, and they really came through. I am so proud of my girls.” Hampton’s Racquel Vassell posted 40.50 points to earn Outstanding Performer accolades. Vassell won the 60m dash, 200m dash and long jump. “I didn’t want to tie again this year, said Vassell.” “We got big efforts all the way around and I am proud of the effort we got today.” Norfolk State finished in second with 107 points followed by Maryland Eastern Shore (88) and Morgan State (61) Howard rounded out the top three with 42 points. Off the track, Norfolk State swept the pole event. Katie Wright captured the gold and set a MEAC record with a 3.36m (11-00.2 ft) leap. Hampton’s Carolyn Lewis held the previous mark of 3.24m (10-07.50 ft.). Teammates Candace Shoates (9-02.50 ft.) and Andrea Sanders (8-08.75 ft.) finished in second and third place respectively.
