Educating "The Least Of These": Charter School Needs Your Help More Now than Ever

The State of Florida legislature is taking steps that could endanger the future of the Joseph Littles - Nguzo Saba Charter School. iZania.com is leading a nationwide fundraising initiative to support the only African-Centered Charter School in the State of Florida. Our goal to raise $150,000.00 to sustain the growth and success of this school is now more important than ever. The Senate PreK-12 Committee, approved the proposal (SB 278). The bill makes a number of changes to current law. Among them, it: Allows school districts to terminate charters if charter schools are in dire financial straits. Gives the Florida Education Commissioner more authority to institute financial checks. The public school system has already discarded these students. Now they are threatening to close the school that is rescuing them from a life of poverty, crime, and despair. Joseph Littles Nguzo Saba Charter School has redirected the lives of students who are now graduating from high school and headed to college - a prospect that many of them never considered when they began their journey with Joseph Littles in the 2nd grade 10 years ago. This year alone, enrollment has incresased from 64 in September 2008, to 120 students at the beginning of February. That is nearly 100% growth in the past 5 months! Grounded in the Nguzo Saba Principles, strong community values, and an unwavering belief in the potential of the children and families served, this school has survived against tremendous odds to celebrate their 10th Anniversary on January 20, 2009, the date on which this country inaugurated its first President of African ancestry! President-elect Barack Obama announced Arne Duncan, the head of the Chicago school system, as Education Secretary, and declared that failing to improve classroom instruction is "morally unacceptable for our children." Among the initiatives supported by the President-elect is a commitment to double the funding for Charter Schools. "No issue is more pressing than education. ...
