[The WHIRLWIND] Enough already - Please!

[The WHIRLWIND] Enough already - Please!

As William Mayo still sits in a Georgia prison, having been there for nearly 18 years now, and as I see hundreds of e-mails circulating telling us to write, e-mail, and boycott the New York Post for the "dead monkey cartoon" it published, and as I see Al Sharpton and other high-profile types get on television decrying racism and asking for an apology from the Post, I am perplexed to say the least, at the juxtaposition. I am disturbed at what seems to be an out-of-whack set of priorities among our people.

I have been deluged with e-mails about the cartoon, and the responses to the Post have been overwhelming, despite the Post thumbing its nose at the protesters. But, William Mayo, a human being, a Black man, a prisoner about whom we have written and for whom we have sought help from "high-profile" types and the rest of our people, to this day still has no outcry from the same folks who are promoting the "dead monkey story" by circulating e-mails and such.

William is currently being considered for release on parole, which is the best he can hope for right now, even though he is innocent. Could I please humbly and desperately ask that we use the same amount of energy we are expending on the dead monkey cartoon to call, write, and send e-mails to the Georgia State Parole Board on behalf of William's release?

Let Al Sharpton continue to do his thing and deal with cartoons; we are dealing with a real life, a brother who does not deserve to be where he is, and a brother who should be among us, doing what he did before he was so viciously and summarily convicted unjustifiably. He has suffered much too long for Black folks especially to deal even one moment with a dead monkey cartoon before we deal with the work at hand to help get this man's life back on track. Want more information about this good man? See The NAACP Crisis Magazine and read the resolution put forth by the Cincinnati Chapter and adopted by the national NAACP, and go to:

www.freemayo.com

to read about his case. Then, get to work on something real!

Peace and love,
Jim Clingman
