Refuse to Be Defined by Statistics

Refuse to Be Defined by Statistics
Posted By: Janet Jackson on March 26, 2009

Lately we are flooded with statistics which includes the unemployment rate; housing foreclosures; stock market rates; and the number of companies folding. And then there are those statistics reporting how many people are divorcing, gaining weight, can't sleep, and how many have every disease imaginable. The list goes on and on.

If they could photograph the statistics crammed in our heads by the media, it probably would resemble the ticker tape that runs an endless loop at the bottom of our television screens on financial news channels.

Do we really need to know this much information? How does that help us as individuals?

It doesn't. We are spiritual beings living in a physical universe and we can transcend any numbers and any barriers when our minds are focused on the possibilities.

Remember, those numbers change constantly, and they are there for marketers to sell more stuff to us; for insurance companies to raise our premiums calculated by how many of us in our neighborhood will have an accident based on our age, jobs, gender, and how far we drive. Statistics sells magazines, newspapers, and boosts television ratings Where does the media get their statistics? They get them from the good people at places like the Rand Corporation.

We need companies like Rand. They help us in many ways, but understand how our energy and moral can be drained by statistics that depress us.

If your job or volunteer work does not depend on you knowing statistics, then leave them to the scientists and politicians.

Find something else to talk about.

Some people say, "But it's important to know these numbers because they're reality."

"Reality is for those who lack imagination. Imagination is everything." Albert Einstein

So what is the answer? Knowing these statistics is not the problem. It's when we get caught up in the numbers, letting them define who we are and impose limits on what we can do and have in life. You are more than a number.

Our minds are creative, and whatever we focus on gives us more of the same. If we are stuck in statistics, our minds gives us "stuck." Our life then reflects being stuck. However, if we use our minds to imagine a beautiful abundant, happy and healthy life for ourselves, despite our present condition, or the economy, we will find doors opening up. We will find a job despite the number of people looking for jobs. Our finances will change despite what our bank account registers. We'll have health, despite of our illness.

Think. Why were we given an imagination if we don't use it to better ourselves? This is why they say we only use 20% of our brain.

If we feel we're at the bottom, then remember the words of motivator Les Brown and envision what you can do. He says, "If you can look up, you can get up."

Today, see a positive tomorrow for yourself. Let your imagination soar!

light and blessings,
Janet

I am in total agreement. I believe in the news diet. The same bad news is there every single day. Of course you cannot totally escape a high buzz..glad that you brought out this information, because we have to strike a balance in our lives. Sometimes the "noise" is so toxic that unless you are in the moment of now, you will get swept away, I wish I could use" 20% " of my brain? :-)
