Ready for change: PWI to HBCU

Ready for change: PWI to HBCU
Posted By: Andrea Paul on April 06, 2009

Hey everyone!! Let me introduce myself:: My name is Andrea (pronounce "AUN-DRAY-UH" lol like chick from Danity Kane lol) but EVERYBODY i have ever met has called me "Drea". So thats my preferred name :p Anyways, Im writing this to get some insight before I make a definite decision... I curently go to Northern Kentucky University (PWI... VERY pWi!). before that i transferred from University of Cincinnati (PWI). Oh Yeah>> Im in my 3rd year but I'll be in school for 5.

So from my collegiate resume, you can see I've been surrounded by White folk since September 06. Since the beginning of this semester (my 1st one at NKU) I am THE ONLY Black person in BOTH my race n gender classes! shoot! to think of it i am the ONLY non-white in these classes. i felt some type-ah way about that. so its winding down to the end of my first semester at NKU and i figured out that im not really feelin the Greater Cincinnati area anymore.

When i was making my college decisions in HS, i was so adamnant about NOT goin to an HBCU. Simply because I had been around Black folk my ENTIRE life (East Orange, New Jersey resident>>yeah. im from the hood. lol) and i felt like experiencing something new. so an out of state PWI it was. Got to UC, and I loved it! made friends, got involved, it was just great.... until i couldnt pay for it anymore. i (thought) i wanted to stay close to the people i had grown so close to over my 2yr term there, so i transfered to the tiny school across the bridge. It worked out well.

Made few friends, actually LIKED my classes, lived in cincinnati, and was allowed to keep all my leadership positions at UC. But then it dawned on me that i just wast feelin the same about the midwest anymore.... so here i am, wanting to transfer to an HBCU (or at least take summer classes and feel out the atmosphere).

Right now this is where Im at::
1) im interested in 3 schools- Clark Atlanta (GA), Central State (OH), and Howard (DC).
2) because of my decision to "submerge" myself into PWI culture, I honestly dont think I'd fit in at an HBCU... NOT saying i dont think im "black enough"... just dont think that Im socialized to be around African Americans 24/7 anymore. (i really hope that didnt come off wrong)
3) I just want a change of environment where i dont feel like i'd be representing Black people as a whole or looked at as the "exception" in classroom settings.

From me to you::
1) What made you decide to go to an HBCU?
2) Besides the cultural aspect, what do you think you've gained attending an HBCU vs what you think you could have gotten from a PWI?
3) Any additional words of wisdom for me?
4) REP YO SCHOOL!! What school do you attend and what makes it the best?

thanks!! hope i can figure this out by May!
