In my families finances, if we continue to spend more than my husband and I make, we soon run out of options and have to go without. Why is it that people think that all this spending is a good thing. How do you continue to spend what you don't have. Give me this type of financial freedom. My kids and my husband NOT TO MENTION ME, will be thrilled. No we must live on a budget and I think it is time that the United States learns to do the same. We can not be all things to all people. Why that last sentence was even included in the blog is beyond my comprehension; but it wasn't at all about President Obama. Would love to counter your comments, though, at another time. Secondly, for the real purpose of this blog I'll say that we've come a long way but not nearly far enough. But it's our own damn fault! I am perplexed when I hear and see the many dark skinned people from India speak impeccable English, get top paying jobs, win ALL the spelling bees -- in English, mind you -- and we still struggle with first grade subject & verb unions. We show butts and tattoos while other cultures have come to this country and within 10 ears have surpassed us economically, intellectually, and accepted into society more widely. So, to even have to ask this question in the 21st century would be laughable if it weren't so sad. The time is over for assessing blame. No one's keeping us down. And if you haven't paid attention lately, the Joneses are actually very poor people working three maybe four jobs just to keep up appearances. It is time we stop talking and start taking responsibilityof our own destinies. Begin at home, and then branch out. Stop complaining about what you don't have, if you have a job you are blessed. If you have to be on a budget that is a good thing, start teaching your children about being on a budget and teaching them how to save their money instead of buying the latest jeans that Beyonce or Diddy comes out with. The progress can be seen with integration and the end of segregation as a whole (although it's still happening but not necessary legalized now). Kids being able to drink from the same water fountain and sit at the same lunch tables together. Progress has been made because black folk don't have to get up from their bus seats and go to the back of the bus anymore. Now for me...I personally have a road map and I mapped it out as a young grade school girl. Jen Fad Nurse at Healthcare I would like to consider myself a success and one who has made progress as a black woman with high achievements, because I dare to care and to share the road map of success with other younger generations. To my credit I inspired my younger cousins to attend college and so far 2 have graduated and have jobs as registered nurses another has graduated and is entering a master’s program in the fall and the other is graduating this May. This is from a family that only had one college graduate before I decided to school for nursing. I do believe we have come a long way, but still we have further to go on this journey. From here we must understand that we as black people have responsibility to speak out against injustices in our communities, in our children’s' schools, and to exercise our freedom of speech responsibly and diplomatically without feeling that our voices will go unheard. Apathy has no place in our lives. We must understand that we as a people must stop back biting one another and dare to care for one another. Last but not least of all…As Bob Marley said, we must free our minds from mental slavery in order to go forward from here. I think the biggest hurdle that our people need to overcome is mental slavery---the prison we erect for ourselves. If a man’s mind isn’t free, I say no one will ever have to physically in prison him, because that man is already locked up. I think Carter G Woodson spoke about this in the MisEducation of the Negro. Ray Walker We have come a long way and will continue to progress based on the real life picture we have in front of us--Mr. Obama's accomplishment over powers any spelling bee, that any Asian can win, as well the impeccable English of many foreigners. Imagine with all our negatives how much we have accomplished, and the best is yet to come. We are an incredible people! As for Ms. Cooper? we do NOT understand how the government balances their books, any more than we understand how Bank of America balances theirs. We are not privvy as to how the borrowing and spending goes and to apply to our meager budgets of twenty thousand a year is laughable! Respect his judgment, Mr. Obama is not by any means lacking in knowledge, of how to put the country back in the black If you still feel this strongly, why not join the silly tea parties, being held by the Republicans? or better yet take a course in accounting, that will give you and idea of how business is run, and it is not like like our home budgets!! thank you.
