Historical Blessings - A Moment of Reflection

Historical Blessings - A Moment of Reflection
Posted By: LaTonya Branham on April 22, 2009

I had the opportunity to spend time at the DuSable Museum in Chicago. I re-discovered that the exhibits revealed more than history. They illuminated the root of our blessings – which is God’s great work. After walking, reading, and reflecting upon the pictures, sound bites, artifacts, and documentaries, I began to think about the blessings. So I am sharing a few historical blessings that have made an impact on my life:
1) Dr. Charles R. Drew – pioneer of blood plasma preservation
2) Pulitzer Prize winning author and poet, Gwendolyn Brooks, for bringing attention to the struggle for dignity.
3) Nannie Helen Burroughs – Educator, business leader, and Christian leader who taught young girls how to become great women.
4) Jan Ernst Matzeliger - inventor of the shoelasting machine which keeps the upper part of a shoe connected to the innersole.
5) Black farmers who till and manage their land from sunrise to sunset so that we can eat fresh food.
6) Dr. Benjamin E.

Mays – Scholar, college president, and minister who reminds us that “The mind is and always be our primary business.”
7) Musicians who entered the back door and ate their food behind a screen so that someday their people would enjoy their music – seated in the front reserved section.
8) The laborers in Africa who work hard to extract the natural resources that make the electronic equipment – which they cannot afford – work for the pleasure of others.
9) Sarah Boone – inventor of the ironing board
10) The leaders of rights and justice who sacrificed their lives – believing that there would be better days ahead.
Rosa Parks once stated “Memories of our lives, of our works, and our deeds will continue in others.”
I could add so much more to the list, but I’d like to invite you to share your thoughts. Visit an African American museum – and I am sure that you will be able to reflect upon a historical blessing.
