The Black Prayer

Did You Make Me Black Lord ...
Lord ... Why did you make me black?
why did you make someone
the world would hold back?

Black is the color of dirty clothes,
of grimy hands and feet...
Black is the color of darkness,
of tired beaten streets...

Why did you give me thick lips,
a broad nose and kinky hair?
Why did you create someone
who receives the hated stare?

Black is the color of the bruised eye
when someone gets hurt...
Black is the color of darkness,
black is the color of dirt.

Why is my bone structure so thick,
my hips and cheeks so high?
Why are my eyes brown,
and not the color of the sky?

Why do people think I'm useless?
How come I feel so used?
Why do people see my skin
and think I should be abused?

Lord, I just don't understand...
What is it about my skin?
Why is it some people want to hate me
and not know the person within?

Black is what people are "Labeled"
when others want to keep them away...
Black is the color of shadows cast...
Black is the end of the day.

Lord you know my own people mistreat me,
and you know this just ain't right...

They don't like my hair, they don't like my
skin, as they say I'm too dark or too light!

Lord, don't you think
it's time to make a change?
Why don't you redo creation
and make everyone the same?

God's Reply:

Why did I make you black? Why did I make you
black?

I made you in the color of coal
from which beautiful diamonds are formed...
I made you in the color of oil,
the black gold which keeps people warm.

Your color is the same as the rich dark soil
that grows the food you need...
Your color is the same as the black stallion
and panther, Oh what majestic creatures indeed!

All colors of the heavenly rainbow
can be found throughout every nation...
When all these colors are blended,
you become my greatest creation!

Your hair is the texture of lamb's wool,
such a beautiful creature is he...
I am the shepherd who watches them,
will ALWAYS watch over thee!

You are the color of the midnight sky,
I put star glitter in your eyes...
There's a beautiful smile hidden behind your
pain...
That's why your cheeks are so high!

You are the color of dark clouds
from the hurricanes I create in September...
I made your lips so full and thick,
so when you kiss...they will remember!

Your stature is strong,
your bone structure thick to withstand the
burden of time...
The reflection you see in the mirror,
that image that looks back, that is MINE!

So get off your knees,
look in the mirror and tell me what you see?
I didn't make you in the image of darkness...
I made you in the image of ME!

love ur post. but black is also the color of positive cash flow in businessess, deep space that still has awesome mysteries, the color of deep reflection and knowledge and also a color that can hold all colors and still remain true to itself.

This reminds me of "Affirmations" on Saturday Night Live (SNL) "... repeat after me, I'm good enough, I'm smart enough and doggone it, people like me!"

What blows my mind is that someone actually felt the "need" to write this nonsense. I'm as black as can be (well, almost), and I NEVER grew up thinking anywhere close to this. It amazes me that in the 21st century we still have the "woe is me" approach to life. There are dark- skinned people thriving in this country from all over the world -- like India -- who came here, embraced education and succeeded. No 400 year old excuses.

BTW: SNL made a joke out of people needing affirmations such as this. Simply amazing.

We have been taught to hate ourselves. This conditioning is insidious. It goes very deep and infects our families from one generation to the next. It's so important to share positive thoughts like yours. Keep it up!

I think you will enjoy my article on The Key to Confidence.

I loved your poem! I totally disagree with one of the earlier posts that suggests that Black people and/or Dark people not needing affirmations. I guess he's feeding into the lies and fake rhetoric of a "post-racial" America. I do not believe it! The only difference is that NOW it's not politically correct to be a racist; therefore, we have the advent of what I term "in-the-closet" racists. We don't know who is racist any more. I've written a similar poem myself. I titled it "Why does the color of my skin offend?" I felt that it needed to be written because despite all of the successes we've attained here in America, it seems that our race is still the first to take a hit when bad news abound in the media. For example, we have more teen pregnancy, more young women with AIDS, more people unemployed, more people losing their homes, and more, more, more, etc.

Good Bless you, Sister! I can't wait to read your next poem. Keep on schooling these people...and maybe one day eyes will be opened.

Wow !
YOU MAKE MY DAY !
I'm glad you can see and comprehend what I'm doing special sanders. I already know that you're part of the chosen few !
I'm just tapping the iceburg !
God has given me a roadmap and some signposts along the way, and ain't NO STOPPIN US NOW ! ( I say us, cause we need people, like H&R block) ! I got people ! LOL !
More than any class that needs to wake up and smell the roses is the BLACK WOMAN, ("SLEEPING BEAUTY").
She holds, and always has held the power, ( keys to the kingdom ) ! But she don't even know who she is anymore !
Well, I've got a baseball bat ! LOL !
You know Im busy, don't you ?
They don't even see me coming, but nonethless here I come !
I want to fly,..... really I am, but have to take baby steps in the process.
If I set the table wth All the food, they'll throw up, it'll be too much !
Gotta feed a little cheese at a time, thats the ONLY way you can lead the sheep to greater pasture !
Can you dig what I'm sayin here ?
I know already that YOU CAN !
Peace and Blessings always, Beloved !

Oh, and by the way, we also know that racism is on a more sophisticated level !
It's gone high-tech !
Only we haven't been able to keep up with it because a lot of us was looking for enlightenment in church. We were looking down, when we should've been looking up.
Like earth, wind and fire keep you head to the sky, lookin up !
But then again, the blind can't lead the blind !
