Personal Security And Safety Issues In Our Ever Changing Society

Posted By: Vinicent Holland on May 18, 2009 Friends, Family, Colleagues And To Those Who Think, Caution Is Advised As we move ahead towards the end of 2008 I’d like to remind all of us to be alert. I don’t have to rehash the details as we are all aware of the current national and international economic climate. My concern lies in the development of increased foolish, wreckless and downright life-threatening actions of people desparate to make it day to day. It’s a shame that we will spend many hours passing information on how to be safe online and offline in the coming days, weeks and months. Being vigilant is not going to be an option. We will have to change our shopping habits, our home security situations and our automotive driving tendencies. For the store owners, shrink, i.e. THEFT, is going to be and even tougher control issue. It’s going to take “guerilla tactics” to help keep shrink at manageable levels. For patrons and customers of stores, you’re going to have to be vigilant of not only your purse, wallet, checkbooks, credit cards, account and pin numbers but also during your post shopping experience. Secure your shopping cart. Lock your cars. Conceal items in the trunk or by some other means if they are left on seats or floorboards. I recently saw a car that was parked beside me and the owner had left not only their recent purchases on the seat in plain view but there was a purse on the seat as well and the car was 20 spaces from the front of the store. Needless to say, this kind of mistake could be costly in the coming days. At home, we are going to have to make use of shredders to destroy documents with important information on them before we dispose of them. Pre-approved credit card offers and other information that could hint at your credit-worthiness should be shredded before being thrown away. Identity theft is booming. This rather broad term takes in any number of privacy crimes, including theft of a Social Security number, a credit or debit card, or even the pilfering of phone calling cards. A recent General Accounting Office report estimates that as many as 750,000 Americans are victims of identity theft every year. And that number may be low, as many people choose not to report the crime or, for that matter, even know theyve been victimized. Officials say much of identity theft still comes down to hands-on mischief — things like Dumpster diving, in which criminals sift through trash to find a credit-card statement or solicitation that someone didnt tear up, and ’shoulder surfing’, where criminals try to spot calling card and personal identification numbers, and more commonly, mail theft. How to boost your home security. Windows open to catch a breeze. Doors unlocked while you work in the garden. Wallets, purses, and other valuables left in plain sight. All those things make summer the peak season for home break-ins. Here are some simple, inexpensive ways to keep burglars at bay during the summer and year-round. Kickproof your doors. Many burglars kick in doors to get in. But unless your door is hollow, the door is not what’s allowing burglars easy entry. We tested solid-wood, fiberglass, and steel doors with increasingly hard blows from a battering ram and found little difference among the door materials. All eventually failed because the doorjamb split near the lock’s strike plate. You can strengthen any exterior door by using a 1-inch-long deadbolt lock and a reinforced metal box strike. The latter cost about $10. Use 3-inch-long screws to mount them so they lodge in the framing beyond the doorjamb. Tips to Prevent Car Theft Take Your Keys. Nearly 20 percent of all vehicles stolen have the keys in them. Lock Your Car. Approximately 50 percent of all vehicles stolen were left unlocked. Never Hide a Second Set of Keys in Your Car. Extra keys can be easily found if a thief takes time to look. Park in Well-lighted Areas. Over half of all vehicle thefts occur at night. Park in Attended Lots. Auto thieves do not like witnesses and prefer unattended parking lots. MORE……… And for those of us who work in the Internet Marketing / Affiliate Marketing / E-Commerce field link theft will be even more of a problem. Folks are determined to find ways to get a quick buck even on the internet. Thieves have discovered a way to steal right under our noses. We link to our products and services fully believing that those who use our links will follow them and we will receive our just commissions and referral fess only to discover that thieves have found a way to change our links and redirect our commissions to their Clickbank and other payment method accounts. Many affiliate programs have already been victimized and many more will be attacked as well. We need to be diligent and use every method to cloack, encrypt and otherwise hide our links so that thieves can not steal what we work honestly to earn. As we move forward into 2009 and beyond, those are just some of the ways that we need to be aware of and make the necessary adjustments to our mindsets, habits and lifestyles so that we can live in a safer and economically sensible manner.
