Fayetteville, NC - Fayetteville State University has a celebrated golf program with many accolades. The Broncos have competed regionally and amongst the East coast. On May 16th, the golf team will depart campus for its first-ever National Championship Tournament and be the first HBCU in 35 years to qualify. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) began the Division II Golf Championships in 1963. In 1965, Lincoln University of Missouri was the first HBCU to qualify and finished fifth. Chicago State qualified in 1974 and finished 31st. Western Washington University, of Blaine, WA, will host the Finals at the Loomis Trail Golf Club from the 19th through the 22nd.

Fayetteville State University has sponsored a Division II men's program since 1971. Head Coach Raymond McDougal took control of the program in 1993 and led the Broncos to four straight CIAA Championships. To-date, FSU has won 14 conference titles under Coach McDougal and a total of 25 for the program.

The Broncos have enjoyed individual success throughout its golf program. It has a list of 58 All-CIAA Golfers since 1979.

In order to accomplish such a feat, one would have to finish in the top five of the championship tournament. The Low Medalist Award has been won by 20 Bronco golfers since 1974. Four of the six FSU golfers this season have been declared All-CIAA: Joel Lynn, Kevin Lyles, Derek Scott, and Jeremy Ringled. Scott also received the Low Medalist Award.

FSU has participated in 15 of the 23 PGA National Minority Golf Championships and has won six Division II Titles; four in a row since 2006. The Broncos have had five individuals win the Low Medalist Award. Joel "Chip" Lynn won the most recent award this year.

The Broncos have participated in seven NCAA DII Super Regions and has finished as high as third in 2007 and most recently second.

Coach McDougal has coached five All-Americans, six CIAA MVPs, eight CIAA Tournament Medalist and 41 All-CIAA Performers. He has been named the CIAA Coach of the Year 12 times.

Live scoring of the Nationals will be made available at www.fsubroncos.com and at www.golfstat.com.
